Last week Friday the 9th of December marked 40 years since the Maseru Massacre and we thought to reflect on it this morning. This was one of the bloodiest cross-border raids by the then South African Defence Force, year after a similar raid in Matola, Mozambique. Today (Monday 16 December) marked as the Day of Recommendation since 1995 in our country also serves as part of getting to know our history. So we are using this hour to talk to Kgosikgolo Kgafela Kgafela of the Bakgatla Bakgafela because on Thursday he addressed his people both in South Africa and Botswana where he announced the establishment of his traditional council and chief representative in our country. He has been in exile in South Africa for 10 years after a fallout with Botswana's President Masisi's government over land claims and restoring the Bakgatla to their former glory. He is hoping to go back to Botswana now that there is a new government. Before we even talk about the current state of affairs, let's first get a history lesson about him, his people and what he's fighting for...

The event will take place at Vredendal, Matzikama Local Municipality in the Western Cape. This year's theme is: Healing Historical Wounds and Forging New Futures. But then judging from the kind of comments we hear in the media from ordinary South Africans, have we healed as a nation from the ugly face of apartheid? National Day of Reconcilation:  Healing Historical Wounds and Forging New Futures

The Electricity Regulation Amendment (ERA) Act is set to change the electricity supply chain by introducing new players in electricity production and distribution markets. The Act would seek to encourage more investment in the power generation, promote sustainability and reduces the risk on the national grid. The new Act will also establish an independent transmission system operator that will be under the supervision of the National Transmission Company of South Africa to ensure equal treatment among public as well as private institutions. The Act will also strengthen the role of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa in its licensing powers.

The amendment was set to be implemented from 1st January 2025 but faces delays by up to 3 months. This is due to concerns raised by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and metropolitan municipalities surrounding clause one of the ERA which changes the definition of reticulation - saying its unconstitutional. This would change municipalities’ role when it comes to the authority to trade and distribute of electricity. How will these changes affect municipalities if implementation goes forward? How will this legislation help develop more competitive tariffs? To share their insights, we are joined by….
