The scariest thing about it is that the ages are getting younger as the latest stats revealed that about 94 of the young mothers are between the ages of  10 and 14. These are the ones who gave birth at public health facilities since April.  Close to 4-thousand who gave birth around the same time are between the ages of 15-19. On Monday we received a couple of calls from entrepreneurs complaining about the devastating impact of late payments from the government to their business. A very worrying report by the National Treasury has revealed that in 2023/24 national and provincial departments failed to pay R35bn to suppliers within 30 days, as required by law.

Public Service Commission responds to Impact of late payment of small businesses

This morning, we try something new. We venture into classical music and more specifically - Opera. This genre is in full bloom in South Africa as many talented performers have made a breakthrough on international stages around the world: Pretty Yende, Zanne Stapelberg, Phumeza Matshikiza, Golda Schultz and many more.

Our next guest is renowned in his own right and is building a new generation of performers who will take the baton forward. Recently, Opera UCT held a world premiere for stage adaption of Gaetano Donizetti's the lost opera: Dalinda. We are also joined by one of the leads of the play to tell us their journey into opera and performance. The opera performance also saw the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie was in attendance alongside various stakeholders to show their support and commitment to the arts.

Friday Wind Down with Opera UCT

Last year on the 19th of May, we spoke to representatives from the Matatiele Local Municipality after a video showing young children crossing a river where there was no bridge. The bridge was swept away by a storm. They came on the show promising to fix that bridge and other infrastructure. They also promised to come back on the show to give feedback, but since then, they kept on postponing the discussion. On the 26th of October, the communications team came to the SAfm offices to talk about a possible partnership, but then the team reminded them that they owed the residents of Matatiele a feedback interview. So today we decided to speak to the opposition parties to get a sense of what is going on in that municipality since the management does not want to honour the interview.
