Yesterday, we started the week by commemorating the 30th anniversary of the passing of Oliver Reginald Tambo on 24 April 1993. The Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation commemorated the day by screening the 2019 documentary: The Jewel in our Crown which delves into the mind of the master diplomat, whose vision and foresight created the network of global alliances that constituted the anti-apartheid movement, the largest solidarity movement in history. His death took place two weeks after the assissination of Chris Hani and shook the nation to its core. During the his funeral on 2 May 1993, former President Nelson Mandela reflected: “Oliver lived not because he did all the things that all of us as ordinary men and women do. Oliver lived because he had surrendered his very being to the people. He lived because his very being embodied love, an idea, a hope, an aspiration, a vision.”  “While he lived, our minds would never quite formulate the thought that this man is other than what the naked eye could see. We could sense it, but never crystallise the thought that with us was one of the few people who inhabited our own human environment, who could be described as the jewel in our crown. In one case, an official was suspended with full pay for 883 days while his disciplinary process was completed. Our next guest argues that precautionary suspensions are generally used as an interim measure imposed for orderly administration, not as a disciplinary sanction. They are intended to protect the interests of both the employer and employee while investigating allegations against an employee. The taxpayer’s interests should also be paramount in public service. In this hour, we discuss this with workers union in the public sector on the impact it has on productivity and service delivery. The department’s forensic pathology services (FPS) in Gauteng have 938 unclaimed and unidentified bodies across their 11 mortuaries. We thought to use this opportunity to educate ourselves around these processes and also for those foreign national who pass away in the country as to how their families can claim them.  One of the cases that is dominated the news is how Dr Nadipha allegedly stole three bodies, also how it was assumed that the body that burnt in the prison cell is that of Thabo Bester, the big question is how can something like this happen and what is the role of forensics in all of this? It is not just about hunger, but also about the quality and variety of foods that children eat. The intermingling of traditional IsiZulu musical forms with contemporary music is the confluence at which the two artists meet; Sjava makes his way through African Trap and AfroSoul while Big Zulu boisterously asserts by way of Hip-Hop. Inkabi Zezwe - an isiZulu term of endearment that, when used in the context of music, describes a unified brotherhood that is representative and reflective of the nation. Zezwe means 'of the Nation', simply put, Sjava & Big Zulu are two giants who have united for this once-off collaboration as an offering to the nation. Their lead single to the project, Umbayimbayi has gone gold this week.

Our next guest has conducted a study looking at the impact of food insecurity and mental health in the country. One of the gaps he indentified was our understanding on the impact of households’ coping strategies on mental health. Such strategies include eating less, borrowing or using credit, and even begging for food on the streets.

It is also the day the Pan African Congress (PAC) was formed. With all of these developments in mind, we speak to David Letsoalo who calls himself a Sankarist. He has written an article where he talks about the loss of conscience of black leaders. One of the things he says is that it’s only through our consciences that we can bring about meaningful transformation on our journey to true liberation after the disappointment that followed the post-independence Afrika and, indeed, the “post-apartheid” South Afrika.
