In last 3 years, the cost of living crisis has crippled many households as food inflation rose to 4,7% overall. According to the recent Household Affordability Index report, theaverage household food basket going up to R2,860.84 for September 2024 (Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group). These pressures have made it difficult for lower income consumers to keep up with new prices and placing more households at serious risk of being food insecure. According to the Competition Commission, several retailers and producers have not lowered their prices despite a better economic outlook.

In this discussion, we want to unpack if consumers will benefit from lower food prices given the easing of inflation, fuel prices, stronger exchange rate and loadshedding in recent months. We also talk about the role retailers/food producers play when it comes to pricing and how different stakeholders can play a role in advocating for consumers.

Food prices

Yesterday (Sunday) the SACP launched it Red October camping under the theme: Tackle the cost-of-living crisis and implement the NHI now. This theme reflects on the need to prioritize the recovery of the working class after facing limited access to public goods. The campaign also seeks to address how the party can share proposals on overcoming unemployment, poverty as well as inequlity in South Africa.

This morning, we invited the South African Communist Party to share some of their insights. We ask them what a caring socialist outlook could help build a better society that uplifts the dignity of workers. The party forms part of the tripartite alliance and play a critical role in setting the agenda when it comes to government policy and what direction society should be taking in achieving the national democratic revolution. We just wanted to understand how impactful is this campaign in positioning the party as leader in society two decades later.
