On the 11th of April this year, we spoke about the AmaGqunukwebe traditional community about the lack of service delivery in their area. They felt ignored by the local and provincial government as no services are rendered to them. So we then had a discussion with them, and some of the representatives from both the Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality and the Provincial Department of Transport to try and find out what is happening on the ground. Lot’s of promises were made, but the community members have since gotten back to us telling us that not much has changed since the discussion.

The Human Rights Commission has expressed its concerns at reports of alleged racism at the Pretoria Girls High and Pinelands High School in the Western Cape. Both incidents have dominated the national agenda with mixed reaction from the public. Incidents of racism have been occurring for many years even as we mark 30 years of democracy. What does the Commission believe is behind some of the racial incidents what would they say can be done to make sure we don't go through this again?

Human Rights Commission concerned about racial incidents

Earlier in July, we had callers on our open-line who shared their distress surrounding navigating public transport. One of our callers had shared the challenges facing e-hailing drivers, how some were being compelled to use the Shesha App through illegal “stop-and-go” and being fined by taxi associations. We had several operators call in to share their experiences and their concerns on lack of regulations to protect drivers. Last week, another caller spoke about how she and a group of colleagues had been harassed by a private security company that was deployed to deal with taxi violence. The group of co-workers were stopped before leaving Pietermaritzburg.  In this hour, we get updates since these initial calls and hear feedback from subsequent meetings on how the industry can work amicably to ensure the safety of passengers and operators.
