Government departments in the Northern Cape owe Kimberley based Sol Plaatje Municipality over 700 million-Rand on rates and taxes. The departments, businesses and residents collectively owe over 3.8 billion-Rand. Over the weekend the municipality blocked electricity meters of indebted residents, a decision that has since been rescinded following threats of violence. Premier Zamani Saul has called on departments to act ethically and pay their debt. The municipality has also been in the news over water shortages and other service delivery issue.
