The Kgetlengrivier Local Municipality is situated in the North West province under the Bojanala Platinum District. Under them is Swartruggens, Koster and Derby. Other than poor roads and a lack of water, they were also in the news for groundbreaking court cases. In 2020 the High Court in Mafikeng ruled that the municipality was in breach of its legal obligations in that they failed to deliver water and sanitation services. This then allowed residents to take over some of the services like water supply and the abandoned sewage plant. Local businessman Willie Jones led the process of fixing the water issues by not only putting up R2.5 million of his own money, but also getting directly involved on the ground. They ran the operations successfully, but then the courts again gave control back to the municipality meaning back to sewage problems.
