The Special Investigating Unit has been cracking down on different municipalities dealing with corruption. Just this week they raided the Masilonyana Municipality in the Free State investigating allegations of maladministration of two tenders. Last month they pounced on the Makana Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape. They have raided quiet a number of municipalities this year unravelling huge amounts of funds that were embezzled by the different officials working in these municipalities. So this morning we thought to get them to educate us how they deal with municipal corruption and how they determine which municipality to pounce on. Also what role does the public play in reporting the corruption? And protective mechanisms for whistle-blowers seeing that we live in a country where people get assassinated for blowing the whistle on corruption.

Municipal Watch: How the SIU deals with municipal corruption

It was 10 years ago (9th of March 2015) when Chumani Maxwele threw faeces on the statue of Cecil John Rhodes on the University of Cape Town's upper campus. This singular act gave birth to the #RhodesMustFall movement and became a catalyst for heightening the #FeesMustFall movement. This movement which remains active as thousands of students took to the streets last month to raise the same issues.

The movement was initially about the removal of the statue of Cecil Rhodes, a symbol that protesters felt was oppressive. The movement grew to encompass institutional racism, the lack of racial transformation at the university, access to tertiary education, and student accommodation.  Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mamokoko Kubayi has added her voice in condemning the brutal killing of another whistleblower and community activist, Pamela Mabini. Her murder on Friday at her home in Gqeberha again sparked outrage bringing to light the continued problem of assassination of outspoken social justice activists. One of the things Minister Kubayi pointed to in a statement is reviewing legislation to close loopholes that hinder the safeguarding community activists, whistleblowers and witnesses to name a few. So we thought to use this opportunity to hear from Parliament, the Justice Department and the police regarding where the processes are and the impact these murders are having on the overall fight against crime, corruption and the mismanagement of the country.
