On 28 May 2014, decorated poet Maya Angelou passed away. The luminary was lauded as global citizen, civil rights activists and luminary in the sphere of literature. As part of the 10th anniversary, our next guest delves into her legacy and unpacks how she used her platform to speak about pan-Africanism.

For some who may not know, Angelou lived in Ghana, Liberia and Egypt in the 1960s where she started to engage in discussions surrounding global civil rights struggle, transnational citizenship and the decolonialization of Africa. She was a part of a group of expats who shaped public intellectual thought on the continent and back in the United States of America: W.E.B du Bois, Malcolm X, Pauli Murray, C.L.R James, Julian Mayfield, Muhammad Ali, William Gardner Smith and St. Clair Drake.

Guest: Professor Simphiwe Sesanti - Professor of Education at the University of the Western Cape
