The National Department of Health has urged South Africans to remain calm following Sunday’s announcement that monkeypox is now a public health emergency of international concern. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), stated that there are now more than 16 000 cases in 75 countries.
What are the origins of the disease? Why do we hear so little about the disease? Why was it called Monkeypox? What are the symptoms of the virus? How does the virus compare to other viral diseases (eBola vs SARS vs Bird Flu)? How does this outbreak compare to the COVID-19 pandemic? Will we encounter the same vaccine programme that we experienced during COVID-19?
