The National Department of Health has urged South Africans to remain calm following Sunday’s announcement that monkeypox is now a public health emergency of international concern. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), stated that there are now more than 16 000 cases in 75 countries.

How does the virus compare to other viral diseases (eBola vs SARS vs Bird Flu)? How does this outbreak compare to the COVID-19 pandemic? Will we encounter the same vaccine programme that we experienced during COVID-19?
