Melanie Scholtz is a South African jazz singer, composer, dancer, and visual artist known for her contributions to the jazz genre. She began playing piano at the age of 5, inspired by her parents/grandparents and is a graduate of the University of Cape Town's School of Music (majored in Opera).
She has received several awards, including the Standard Bank Young Artist award for Jazz in 2010. Scholtz has collaborated with prominent musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Bokani Dyer, the late Hugh Masekela, anti-Apartheid poet James Matthews, Benjamin Jephtha, Jo Fougner Skaansar and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
She joins to talk about her highly anticipated new album: Seven and reflect on some of the major themes of this body of work that she describes as “the magic of being in the right place at the right time”.
