Declining trust in the public sector:The Madlanga Commission has exposed the kind of rot that takes place in the public sector. Blatant corruption, intimidation, assassinations, cover-ups and just a general sense of unethical conduct. But when it comes to accounting for this misconduct, some of the witnesses have not only fallen short, but don’t want to be prosecuted. The South African Public Servant Code of Conduct which is Chapter 10 of the constitution requires officials to act with integrity, accountability and professionalism. It demands that public servants put the public interest first and uphold the principles of Batho Pele.

As a member of the public, what should we read into the kind of people that are in public office? How did they get there and what creates a kind of corrupt culture within the public sector? What will it take to restore public trust in government? Is it too late to turn the situation around?

Guest: Reuben Maleka – General Manager at the Public Servants Association

Guest: Sabelo Chalufu is the Founder and Director of the Better Governance Initiative (BGI) – They are an independent, non-partisan civic organisation working to strengthen democracy by empoweringresidents to engage government, shape policy, and hold leaders accountable.
