The Lusikisiki killings which took place a few weeks ago has no doubt shook the nation. 18 family members were shot and killed in two houses where they gathered at the Ngobozana village for a traditional ceremony. It is still not clear what the motive of the shooting was. In recent times, we have witnessed several mass shootings across the country that has left communities traumatized. More often than not, these bereaved families are left with very limited resources in the form of psycho-social support and how to rebuild their lives.
This morning, we speak to Nomfundo Mogapi as she shares her experience in Lusikisiki as she engaged with the police, pastors, social workers, GBV combat teams and forensic experts to support the family members. She also highlights the need for more structural support when it comes to preparing social workers, pastors, forensic professionals and combat teams for scenes of mass violence so they can help communities process the trauma of these experiences.
