Yesterday (Tuesday) we received a voice note from a very worried father seeing help for his daughter who is smoking marijuana. Some of the concerns he raised is that she is very young. But as we all know that the age of experimenting differs from age to age even though it can lead to long-term addiction. Let’s take a listen to what he had to say in the voice note….

Citizens corner: Young people and substance abuse

As companies start the process of closing the year, 108 companies have released their corporate social investment project figures with a total estimated at R12,7 billion. This is a 7,5% increase compared to 12 months ago. A new report has tracked the trends for the year where it unpacks how corporate giving is managed and how these projects are moved from financial giving to their product, service or mentorship. Under the theme: “Collaboration for Change”, the report also highlights how companies create capacity-building opportunities for community-based organizations and which sectors are the largest beneficiaries. Our next guests argue that collaboration and leadership remains key to overcoming social challenges facing the nation. They believe strategic philanthrophy can make a better social impact on communities and help build a better South Africa. To tell us more about more about the findings, we are joined by….

  Can Corporate Giving still play a role in overcoming social challenges?

The Electoral Reform Consultation Panel (ERCP) is urging South Africans to take part in reforming the country’s electoral system. The Panel has been tasked with investigating, consulting and making recommendations with respect to the broad rules governing the manner in which the citizens select their leaders and how power is subsequently distributed amongst contestants at all levels of government. In order to determine what an appropriate electoral system for South Africa would look like, the ERCP has adopted seven guiding principles: Inclusivity, Fairness, Simplicity, Accountability, Electoral Manageability, Transparency & Stability through Efficient Government.

Last week, the Electoral Refrom Consultation Panel released a discussion paper will serve as the foundation for the public hearings in the coming months and outlines the key concepts related to electoral system design in South Africa. The report unpacks our History, System Design, Constitutional provisions and the role public submission will play in building the next reform. To help us understand the report, we are joined by…
