In recent weeks, we have seen a rise in cases of extortions around the country. Four provinces make up 73% of crimes related to extortion: Kwa-Zulu Natal, Eastern Cape, Gauteng & Western Cape. Extortion has been linked to basic services, businesses, infrastructure, transport system and Nightlife.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Police attended a plenary session to respond to the questions of MPs during a debate in Parliament. Minister Senzo Mchunu addressed the plenary stating that they are working with provinces and municipality to create operational plans. The Ministry is working on a National Policing Policy that will provide an outline to addressing extortion.
