While South Africa has held numerous successful elections since 1994, we want to talk about the challenges IEC faces when fulfilling their mandate: budget cuts, civic education, the changes coming into effect with digitalization, and the impact that electoral reform will have on the work of the institution. Chapter Nine Series: the Independent Electoral Commission

We continue our series with Miyelani Holeni talking about the different spheres of local government and how they can be improved in order to run municipalities more efficiently. This morning we turn the focus on professionalising local government. This is something many of the campaigning political parties are promising to look into.What then can we safely say is behind municipalities ending up with the wrong people who are said to be behind the collapse of so many municipalities? Also if I was leader of a political party, what would be the first thing to change at local government level?

Municipal Watch: Professionalising local government

Johannesburg will be playing host to this year’s Africa Children’s Summit. It brings together children from across the African continent to share their experiences on matters of children's rights, interventions by their governments and share recommendations or solutions. This week while making the announcement, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, Dr Linda Ncube-Nkomo said that what will happen is that adults will take what children have said and report it elsewhere and to sit down and to listen to those voices and also to be able to create a continental platform for the children of Africa to get together and to start to define what sort of Africa fit for children looks like from their lived experiences.

Sadly though is that it comes at a time where children in this country are in the news for all the wrong reasons, from being harmed, kidnapped, missing or living in terrible conditions. As we build-up to the summit, we thought to use the opportunity to talk about the state of children in our country and what we can do to make things better.

2024 Africa Children's Summit and the state of children in SA

As we continue to coverage of political parties ahead of the 2024 National and Provincial elections, we speak to the Economic Freedom Fighters on their election manifesto that was launched back in February 2024 in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The theme of their election campaign: “Our Land and Jobs Now! Stop Loadshedding” as part of their road to victory.

The 2024 manifesto has seven pillars: (1) land expropriation without compensation; (2) nationalization of the mines, banks and economic institutions; (3) abolishment of the tender system; (4) free quality services (health, education, housing & sanitation); (5) industrial development & employment; (6) continental justice; & (7) combatting corruption.
