Our next guest led the largest longitudinal study on the continent, following the lives of 3000 children born in 1990. The aim of the study presented the journey, aspirations and challenges of the country that was being created before their eyes. The outcomes of that study form part of a new published book that provides insights into five major themes of child development in relation to the South African experience in the past 30 years: violence, learning and education, growth and health, mental and social well-being, and social engagement. The book not only seeks to unpack how we wish to build the nation that is inclusive of our children's ambitions but how it socially impacts the structural fault lines that still persist in the present dispossess them from a shared future and the inheritance of this democratic dispensation.
