She will this week be hosting a colloquium with economists, professors and other stakeholders to come up with ideas that will improve the economic state of the province. Auditor General Tsakani Maluleke had painted a very bleak picture of the financial state of the municipalities in the province. The expansion of social protection has been discussed since the White Paper on Social Security of 1998. Our next guest argues that universal basic income should not been seen as social welfare but as economic stimulus. Our next guest argues that universal basic income is one of seven pillars that required to turnaround South Africa’s outlook and address the declining living standards of the past 19 years. They take it one step further and have proposed that the government needs R656,9 billion to implement universal basic income over the next three years.

We continue with our Freedom Month coverage, we return to the conversation we started looking at the progress and challenges faced by persons with impairments after 30 years of democracy in South Africa. In part one, we explored freedom, exclusion from key rights and political representation in society. The discussion also explored the foundational policies that were put in place to advance equality but have not translated into implementation in the last two government administrations. One of the key issues of the last three decades that we have not addressed is our language and how we dismantle stigma when we speak about impairment in society.
