The accountancy profession has grown since the dawn of democracy. However, only 29,1% of South African female graduates work in public-practice audit, tax and advisory ﬁrms. Of those working within public practice, these professionals are less likely to make partner than their male counterparts. This is according to the Women in the Workplace research report that looks into why women leave the public practice and how we keep female chartered accountants within the public sector.

This is one of the many challenges facing women who want to pursue a career in accountancy. The African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA) has helped to grow the number of African female chartered accountants from 404 to 8588 in 2022. Through its ethos “develop as welead”, AWCA has to date funded 135 postgraduate students with ambitions of becoming Chartered Accountants (CAs).
