A new study reveals that one in five alcoholic drinks sold in SA are illegally

Illicit alcohol market has grown to R25 billion industry in 2024. The sale of illicit alcohol not only impacts the public health sector and consumer safety, it also impacts public finance as the government has lost R16,5 billion in taxes from illicit alcohol. In a new study on illicit alcohol in South Africa, a consumer survey revealed that half (50%) of the participants knew somebody harmed by illicit alcohol and 29% of participants knew somebody who have lost their lives. Our next guest has teamed up with Euromonitor International to help us understand the severity of the problem and share what stakeholders can do to eradicate the sources of illicit alcohol in communities.
