Carteret County Sheriff Asa Buck announced in a news release early Tuesday morning that he will seek the Republican nomination for the newly redrawn 1st Congressional District, which now includes Carteret County. Buck, who has served as sheriff for the past 19 years, would be up for re-election in 2026, but with this announcement, he will vacate that office, leaving it open for other candidates. In a radio interview with The Talk Station WTKF-FM 107.1, Buck said that he had intended to run for sheriff and then reversed that decision after reflecting on the opportunity the new congressional district presented. But also in that decision, he noted that he was comfortable with the current state of the Sheriff’s Office and that he is endorsing his chief deputy, John Nyberg, to replace him as the county’s chief law enforcement officer.
