On August 5, 2019, the Narendra Modi led government abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. A lockdown imposed then, was extended after the COVID-19 pandemic struck the country.

Modi had promised that industrial growth will flourish in the region after the abrogation.
