Pastors are called to lead, teach, pray and care for their churches—but what happens when the weight of ministry becomes too much?
On this episode of The Steve Marston Show, Steve sits down with Pastor Philip Miller, longtime pastor of First Baptist Church in Bryant, Arkansas, to have an important conversation about pastor burnout, ministry fatigue and the pressure pastors often put on themselves.
Philip shares honestly from his own experience with burnout and explains one of the lessons that helped him recover: pastors were never intended to do all the ministry themselves. Scripture calls pastors to equip believers for the work of ministry. That means healthy churches aren't built around one person doing everything—they're built around believers discovering where God has called them to serve.
Philip also offers an important challenge to church members: check on your pastor. Pastors can struggle silently because they're afraid admitting weakness will cause people to question their ability or calling. Sometimes one of the greatest ways you can serve your church is simply by asking your pastor how he's really doing—and then helping carry the load.
Also on today's show:
• Why isn't the Book of Enoch in the Bible? Steve looks at questions surrounding the biblical canon, why Enoch is referenced in Jude, and why being quoted in Scripture doesn't automatically make another writing Scripture.
• That's Not in the Bible: Is following Jesus really about obeying a giant list of rules? Steve explains the difference between trying to earn God's approval through religious performance and living in the freedom of God's grace.
• Stories You May Have Missed: A sneak peek at the final season of The Chosen, what King David can teach us about responding to moral failure, and a look at several American Idol winners who continue to publicly live out their Christian faith.
• Faith Between Your Ears: This week's memory verse is Micah 6:8—a powerful reminder to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God.
• And, of course, there's a Dad Joke of the Day.
YOUR NEXT STEP: Check on your pastor this week. Ask how he's doing. And if he's overwhelmed, look for something you can do to help carry the ministry load.
