Another unarmed black person killed. What the fuck is this gonna stop?
Stephen A. Smith Show in the house. Let's go. What's up? Everybody?
Welcome to the ladies edition of The stephen A. Smith Show right here over the digital airwaves of YouTube, and of course iHeartRadio. I've got some sports to get into as this show progresses, which I most certainly will because that's my wheelhouse. But there was no way I was going to start the show with any other topic than the one I'm about to broach, because I think it's important. My first topic today is a difficult one, to say the least, coming out of the state of Illinois. Yesterday, footage was released of an officer involved incident that resulted in the death of a Springfield, Illinois woman, and it, once again, as many in our nation, absolutely positively infuriated.
We are not going to show the video here.
If you have not seen it, trust me when I tell you it is graphic and incredibly derbing. Son youa massy aged thirty six, call police to report a possible intruder at her home in Springfield on July sixth. One of the responding officers, Sangamon County Sheriff's Deputy Sean Grayson, thirty years of age, allegedly shot Massy three times after the two got into an argument about a pot of hot water in the residence. On the police body cam footage, Deputy Grayson and another deputy speak calmly with Massy in her home and she looks for her ID.
At the request of the.
Officers, she goes to turn off the stove, which was boiling a pot of hot water. She then picks up the pot, and the other deputy steps back and says, away from your hot, steaming water.
When she asks, where's he going?
Quote I rebuke you in the name of Jesus, she says, in response his quote, you're better fucking not or I swear to God, I'll fucking shoot you in the fucking face end quote, Grayson says. He then draws his fire arm and points it at her, and she ducks and says, I'm sorry while lifting the pot. This is what the video shows. Drop the fucking pot.
Both the deputies yell three shots of her.
After a few seconds of silence, one deputy says shots fired and calls for emergency medical services. Quote, dude, I'm not taking fucking boiling water to the fucking head and look it came right to our feet too, Grayson said. Minutes after the shooting, Grayson speaks to another law enforcement figure. Quote she had boiling water and came at me with boiling water, he says. In the video, she said she was going to rebuke me in the name of Jesus and came at.
Me with boiling water. End quote.
Grayson has been fired and it's charged with three three counts of first degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. He pleaded not guilty to the chargers. The Sheriff's office said, quote, it is clear that the deputy did not act as trained or in accordance with our standards.
End quote.
After an investigation, Deputy Grayson, just to put this out there, worked at six different agencies in four years after being charged twice with DUI and pleading guilty and paid a fine both times in twenty fifteen. In twenty sixteen, Grayson has worked at six law enforcement agencies in Illinois since twenty twenty, according to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board it Natcy's father, James Wilburn, told reporters, quote, I want justice for my baby. You killed the wrong black woman this time.
End quote. I don't know of a right black woman.
To kill, So I wouldn't sit up there and say that, but I will say that I'm very, very happy that he's been the Officer Grayson has been charged with first degree murder because it was murder now without the benefit of video evidence. And I certainly don't mean benefit literally in light of what we were discussing. I understand how some people can sit up there and challenge it, even Officer Grayson himself.
There's no challengingness. That was murder. That was murder.
She's feats away from him in the kitchen area. Yes, she had the boiling hot water, she was not near him. On top of it, all, his life wasn't in danger, and he said right there, I'm not taking boiling water or whatever.
Okay.
So you were worried about boiling water even though she was at a distance.
You also had assistance.
There because there was another deputy police officer with you, and you still shot this woman and shot her three times.
Because you were worried about hot water.
Where you were standing feet away. You weren't then throwing distance. You weren't an armed distance, nothing like that. And you're gonna sit up there and articulate that the water was near your feet.
It's a disgrace. It's a murder. It's murder.
And once again we find ourselves with this very disturbing subject to tackle. Breonna Taylor, Okay, you gotta tak Filando Castile, Freddie Gray. I could go on with a a host a bunch of other names. How about Tyree Nichols with in Memphis. I can go with a bunch of stuff right there. But you know something, Here's what it comes down to, and it's according to the Washington Post article on fatal force, although half of the folk shot and killed by police are white, Black Americans are shot at a disproportionate rate.
No surprise there. We account for roughly fourteen percent.
Of the US population, yet we're killed by police at more than twice the rate of white Americans.
Hispanic Americans are.
Also killed by police at a disproportionate rate. Also, according to the Washington Post database of deadly police shootings, black women are far more likely to be killed by police than other women. So it's not a gender thing, it's a black thing. In this day and age, with the kind of behavior that we've seen.
Where we're literally literally.
Still lamenting an assassination attempt on a former president of the United States by a twenty year old white kid.
Somehow, some way, any.
Time it comes to black folks, for some reason, the inexplicable happens, the inexplicable happens. This cop should be thrown under the damn jail. First degree murder is more than appropriate. Put his ass in jail, and let the fellas deal with him in whatever way they see fit. This is a disgrace, and a thirty six year old woman is dead. She called them fearing an intruder was in a house, and somehow she ends up.
Dead.
I'm not sitting here castigating everybody. I don't think all white people are certain wages, like I don't think all black people are certain wages. I don't think all Latinos are a certain way.
I'm not of that ilk.
But the world that we're living, that we're living in, the level of frustration that still foments and swells within our souls is because of situations like this.
This cop is a murder r Yes he was fired. Appreciate that. Yes he was charged of first degree murder. I appreciate that.
I don't know how he had the gall to say to plead not guilty. I don't know how he pulled that off, or what is he thinking in terms of claiming he's not guilty.
His ass needs to be under the.
Jail, and you want to do what you can to stare our society in the right direction. Stand up universally, no matter your ethnicity, and condemn this man universally.
He's a murderer.
Officer Grayson, former officer Grayson, thirty years of age, should spend the rest of his life in jail, and in some people's eyes, that might be too good for him, and I'm not sure they're lying.
Coming up, we get back to the world of sports.
Carmelo Anthony had some interesting comments on Jason Tatum and joel eNB thinks he could be in the Goat Conversation. Those stories and more up next right here on.
The stephen A.
Smith Show, over the digital areas of YouTube and of Courseheart Radio.
Back with more in a minute. Okay, everybody you know what Tom. It is is Tom for.

All right.
Prize Picks has something for every sportsman, from the WNBA and MLB to League of Legends and everything in between.
You can pick Freddy Freeman, Juan.
Soto, Tyreek Hill, or even Coke Go Golf.
And then sit back and watch.
And if you go to Prospects dot com and you sprom on code, essay, yes, received a one hundred percent depositive bonus up to one hundred dollars.
You heard me, go to Prospects dot com.
Type in mind, this just says say yes to get the first time deposit match up to one hundred dollars.
All right, pick more, pickless. It's really really that easy. All right.
Now, let's look at my winning picks for the day, Tyler Fitzgerald. That's what I'm thinking about right now, more or less than one and a half hits runs RBIs.
In case you missed it, Fitzgerald has.
Hit a home run in five straight games First Giants is Barry Bonds.
In two thousand and four to do that?
By the way, but I only have this option, so this is why it's not just.
Home run for him.
I'm going with more, more, more, okay, no question about it, Tyler Fitzgerald More. Next up on the list, show, Hey, oh, Tayne, more or less than zero point five hits. He is a tani. The man is a monster. He's something incredible. Okay, all right. You think Godzilla and King Kong and all of that other stuff that everybody brings it to the equation for the movies and all the old Tom movies and stuff like that.
You know what, that's not him.
He's a human being, a beautiful human being, by the way, a beautiful baseball player, a beautiful picture, a beautiful picture, and a beautiful hitter.
The modern day Babe Ruth. One could easily say that's who show Hey, oh is.
I'm going with more more more, next up on the list, Please give it to me, Tyler Glass now more or less than six and a half strikeouts. Hm, it is the Dodgers. They are going against San Francisco.
They get out for those games. I'm gonna assume he's gonna do the same.
I'm going with more more him and last but not least, Freddie Freeman more or less than zero point five RBI, same.
Situation, Freddy Knball.
We all know this champion with Atlanta Braves years ago, knows what he's doing on the Los Angeles Dodgers. Okay, he's doing his thing right now. Again, they're going against San Francisco.
He gets up with this.
I think it's gonna be more with him as well. So let's go back and revisit all four of my picks. Okay, Tyler Fitzgerald show, Hey O tai Ne Tyler Glass now and Freddie Freeman.
More and more and more and more and more.
Because when it's Stephen a baby, we always like more, never last, never last. Welcome back to the Stephen Nate Spishial right here for the digital airways of YouTube and of course our heart Radio. Thanks again for the love and support our followers and subscribers have now Eclipse seven hundred and forty three thousand downloads have eclipped over one point three million over the last three months. Thank you for the love and support. Keep it coming, and I'm gonna keep on coming. I'm talking about those downloads on iHeartRadio. By the way, let's get to news in the National Basketball Association, because the NBA has announced a new eleven year TV deal with current partner ESPN and ABC and newcomers NBC and Amazon Prime Video, turning down TNT sports rights to match.
Which could lead to a legal battle.
According to NUME Resources, the new agreements with ESPN, ABC and Amazon are not set to begin until the twenty twenty five to twenty sixth season, meaning TNT could go into its final season under its current contract with the possibility of suing the league it is covering.
Warner Brothers.
Discovery's most recent proposal did not match the terms of Amazon Primes Videos offer, and therefore we have entered into a long term arrangement with Amazon.
This is according to the NBA. We are grateful to.
Turn the sports for its award winning coverage of the NBA and look forward to another season of the NBA on TNT. This is what the NBA said in the conclusion of its statement, TNT dropped the ball here. I'm not talking about Barkley. I'm not talking about Shack. I'm not talking about Kenny Smith or Ernie Johnson. I'm talking about the brass at TNT. It started years ago when they alluded to how unimportant the NBA was to the brand itself and the resistance that they gave in reaching a new deal. Matter of fact, according to my sources, guess what, Adam Silver, the Commissioner, talked to the hanchos at Warner Brothers Discovery before our deal was agreed upon weeks ago, basically letting them know, hey, you need to match.
Here's where we are.
And there was a bunch of hem And and Hahn. See that's why Barkley's been going off because he knew and still knows, it never had to come to this. So now we look at TNT and what are we to make of it? Let me tell you what you make of it. Number one, anybody who can get their hands on Barkley, Shaq, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson should do it, even if it's ESPN, Because yes, I cover the NBA, and I think I do a pretty damn good job of covering the NBA. But those brothers are phenomenal, and they're all my brothers, and I root for them every day, all day, all the time. They are a treasure and a tribute to the league itself. And there's no way on earth there should be a basketball season in the foreseeable future, far beyond next season without them in front of that camera. So hopefully, somehow, some way, there will be a platform available to them, whether it's ESPN, ABC, whether it's Amazon, whether it's NBC, something to keep that team intact. It is an honor and a privilege to have them available to watch.
I root for them all the time.
As for Turner Sports, I've always liked turn of Sports. I've always been a fan of turn of Sports. It was primarily because of them, but I'm still a fan. All I can say is that I don't know where that where that network.
Goes from here.
I mean, how many episodes of Law and Order can you air? I'm just trying to figure it out, along with some of your other programming. You need something live, you need something fresh. How many old movies.
Can you air?
You need something live, you need something fresh. So it's gonna be really interesting to see what they do beyond next season, because there's no way they're winning this lawsuit.
I can't see it.
I can see a settlement happening where millions of paid production fees are.
Picked up and all of this other stuff.
I can't see them winning this and forcing and compelling the NBA to make them a part of the package. Now that this decision has been made, and no matter what pockets they have is nothing appeared to the deep pockets Amazon has. So let's just get that out the way and call it what it is. The last days of T n T. The n b A on T n T is arriving next season. Barkley shot, Kenny Smith, Ernie Johnson. Hopefully it's just the last days of the n B A and t n T, not the last days of that crew on the n B A.
And is the closest one to that.
I think it's because his because he's the most like vocal it's aura, Yeah, like he's.
And the reason why we put ant there is because of his I want j if j T had that aura, it's over. That's not a bad take.
Melow, Congratulations, my brother, I see you elevating in the podcast Strategy. Congratulations on that Carmelo Anthony is not wrong, ladies and gentlemen, because when we look at Jason Tatum, Jason Tatum is an absolute stud and a superstar in this league, a twenty seven point per game scorer, a champion.
Now the brother's big time. He's special.
But here's what Carmelo Anthony is alluding to, even if he didn't completely articulate it, he's right. And here's where it comes from. You have certain guys that they're just about their business, Grab my lunch pail, show up to work, handle my business, do my job, go home.
And that's a lot of players.
But then you have special dudes that you can tell gravitate to being the marquee.
They want to be the marquee. They want to be the people you're looking at. They want to be the headline. They want to steal the show.
They want the attention, they want the allure, the acclaim and all that comes with it.
This is what the.
That was d Wade, believe it or not, even though he didn't win a championship.
That was Carmelo Anthony.
Carmelo Anthony came to make noise, He came to rehab it. He ain't come to grab his lunch pell and go to work quietly and then go home. He came to make noise. Even though numbers would say that's what Tatum does, his persona doesn't say that. We love seeing Jason Tatum reduced the little kid, the beautiful little son of his. We love seeing them on the podium together. We we love seeing them in the pregame, on the court together. We love seeing them walking out on a post game and you know, after the game together. We love all of that beautiful imagery, great role model. All of that stuff is true, But that ain't sizzle. See Sizzle is aunt Man, that's sizzle. Sizzle is the Kyriees of the world.
That's sizzle. Sizzle is Luca Danci.
That's that's what we're talking about, that kind of attitude. We all know that Russell Westbrook hasn't had the greatest last few years.
Has been good, it has been great.
But Russell Westbrook, when he was a superstar in this league, what are we talking about?
It was sizzle?
KD KD Trey sizzle, Lebron Steph sizzle.
Something that extends greatness beyond the basketball court.
A persona, something that embodies you in a way that most other people can't pull off.
That's what Melo was talking about. And guess what, you don't have.
To be a basketball player to relate. It comes in all industries now. Another NBA superstar on Team USA, Joel and b recently did an interview with The New York Times, the same one where he lamented the lack of youth on USA's Olympic roster, and he was asked whether the injuries are the thing keeping him from being in the goat conversation.
Listen to his response quote, I think so. I think I'm that talented.
Obviously, you need to win championships, and win championships.
You need of the guys. You can't do it by yourself.
I want to win so bad. If it doesn't happen, maybe it wasn't meant to happen. The thing that stopped me all.
These years is just freaking injuries.
Every single playoffs, regular season, people falling on my knee or breaking my face twice. It's always freak injuries at the wrong time.
End quote.
Those injuries have certainly played a role in Emband never getting out of the second round of the playoffs. He has had all star teammates and a young Vin Simmons, Jimmy Butler, James Harden, and Tyrese Maxey. We'll see how this season goes with Paul George. But despite being an NBA MVP and two tomes scoring champion, Embiid has.
Missed two hundred and four games in.
His career, the equivalent of over two entire NBA seasons. Let me say this, y'all, Embiid is absolutely right. Injuries have gotten in a way because that brother is something spectacular and without injuries, I have no problem with him being in the go conversation.
Let me tell you something right now.
That brother with his skill set at seven to one, back to the basket, facing the basket, the ability to put the ball on the floor, to the next game, the power game, three point shooting game, the list goes on and on. I'm looking at this number, Sere, do you know that Embiid has averaged over thirty over the last three.
Seasons along with eleven rebounds.
By the way, not only is he shooting when he's shooting from the field forty nine to fifty four to fifty two percent from the field fifty three percent from the field this past season. Not only is He a career fifty fifty percent shooter from the field.
He's also a.
Career thirty four percent shooter from three point range. You usually don't see that from a center in the National Basketball Association, but that's who he is. Joel Embiid is special, make no mistake about it, but his injuries are not the only reason he has it won. Two things stand out in my mind. Second on the list would be Jimmy Butler. The Sixers should have never let him go. They should have never let him get away. Clearly in the aftermath of things. No disrespect to my man Tobias Harris, who I've got a lot of love for, but clearly Jimmy Butler was preferred by Embiid over Tobias Harris, and the Sixers didn't want to pay them both a few years back, so they made the decision to pay Tobias Harris more than one hundred and eighty million dollars and let Jimmy Butler walk away to South Beach, Miami. That was mistake number one, a huge mistake because not only was Jimmy Butler, Jimmy Buckets and somebody that was a rough rider and somebody that would infuse a personality in his team that was made of the championship medal you need representing the city of Philadelphia. But he was also somebody that was.
Beloved by Joel Embiid.
So that was a huge mistake on a part of the Philadelphia seventy six ers. Here is the most egregious one. Here is the most egregious reason why Joel eb has yet to get to a conference finals on NBA Finals and obviously not having won a championship.
That damn Ben Simmons. I've had enough. I've had enough.
I'm sure he's a nice guy. I'm sure that you know. Ben Simmons, hell.
Of a player, couldn't shoot, but could do everything else.
And they talk about mental health and mental illness and it's legit.
It's a legit thing in this world. I do not want to hear that about Ben Simmons. It was on mental.
Problems when it came time to cast the checks. You wann't no mental problems when you were sitting on a bench of street clothes trying to look like zooland of the modern day male model, but Chacardier's, Shad's or anything else that you were rocking everybody got on black, you got on pink.
Everybody rocking the black.
And white Brooklyn at you to fall, you got on skyblue or something. Clearly a pretty boy, you want to do everything but play, but play. Treating playing basketball like somebody was asking you to get on the front lines of a war, but never ever, ever, failing to pick up your check. Ben Simmons severely disrupted the Philadelphia seventy six is franchise, and the same could be said for what he's done in Brooklyn. He is an absolute mess, and if I saw him, I tell it to his face because I had love for him, and I defended him on countless occasions trying to give him a second chance.
This dude don't want to play bad enough. He doesn't want to play.
I'm not questioning his injuries now at the back and every day he doesn't want He doesn't love the game.
Of basketball enough. That is what caused Joelle.
And ban I believe at least a shot of the trip to the finals. Could you imagine if Ben Simmons had never faded. Could you imagine if Ben Simmons showed up for that Game seven in Atlanta, if.
He wasn't scared to shoot a layup? Could you imagine that.
That's what Joel Embiid had to deal with. That's the crime, shame, and thank god he doesn't have to worry about with tyree That about that with Tyreez Maxie and Paul George and Kelly Oubrey for that matter. Thank god, Joel Embiid deserves better, he really really does. Gold conversation and no cold conversation of brothers, big time, plain and.
Simple coming out.

Welcome back to the Stepnay Spits Show right here for the digital it was a YouTube.
A nine Heart radio. It turns out Bill Belichick had at.
Least one offer to continue his NFL career on the sideline this season for the Nineers.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said on.
The TK Show podcast hosted by the athletics Tim Kawakami, that he offered Belichick a spot on his San Francisco forty nine er staff as defensive coordinator, but was politely turned down. Belichick, age seventy two, by the way, interviewed with the Falcons for their head coaching vacancy, but that job went to Raheem Morris. Now he's set to join the media covering the NFL. Shanahan says he believes Belichick will be back coaching in the NFL next season.
End quote.
Well, if you think he's gonna be back in the NFL coaching next season, what the hell you offer him the defensive coordinators job. He's Bill Belichick. The man has won six Super Bowl championships as a head coach. Another two is a defensive coordinator. If I remember correctly, two or three. I think it's two. Okay, we still wait for you to win one, and you're gonna offer him to be your subordinate.
You thought that was complimentary? You really thought that.
I'm just saying one could look at it and say, Kyle Shanahan was thoughtful.
Kyle Shanner was.
Looking out for himself, because if I got a brilliant defensive mind, like Bill Belichick is my defensive coordinator, who just wants to stay in it because he's seventy two years of age and he doesn't want to fade away.
From the game. Okay, Boom, you can look at it that way.
I'm just looking at it from the standpoint that the man has won eight Super Bowls as a coordinator and a head coach and recently got let go. Another season hasn't even started yet, and you're offering him to come on as you're subordinate and you thought that would be a good thing. I'm kind of wondering about that.
That's just me. That's just me.
Either way you slice it, let me tell you all right now, and I mean this, Cecily, I'm not trolling. It was absolutely stupid for the Dallas Cowboys not to let go of Mike McCarthy and offer Bill Belichick the job.
It's not one of.
Those things where you're advocating or calling for Mike McCarthy to be fired.
That's not the subject matter.
The subject matter is that you have a six time champion as a head coach and this man right here, and think about what the problem is.
With the Dallas Cowboys. It's about focus.
It's about not paying attention to the spotlight. It's about an owner that does the talking and the coach having.
To work around all of that.
Who will work around that better than Bill Belichick? He doesn't want to say anything anyway. I mean that gives Jerry Jones the license to talk all he wants to.
You come to Bill Belichick. You know what Bill Belichick to say. Ask Jerry. He's right over there. Ask him, he's right upstairs. Ask him. That's what he'd be doing. That's what he'd be doing.
It would be perfect, and he'd lock in and zero in on the players meticulously, so where he's highlighting every little crevice of deficiency that they may have, making them better and making them worthy of being America's team. But Jerry Jones and Steven Jones didn't want to do that. Why because they want to be the face of the franchise. Then they want to run everything. They don't understand. You would have been running everything. Bill Belichick would have been happy to let you run everything.
Go ahead and talk to the media, be.
The pr person, talk all day every day. Unless Jerry, you really really want to tell a coach what to do, and you know there's no way in hell you're gonna be able to get away with telling him what to do as a coach on the sideline, and that's what you didn't want, so you kept McCarthy, which means you must be doing it to McCarthy.
I don't know.
I'm just speculating. I'm just saying, how do you miss out on this? There's two things that the Dallas Cowboys did this year that messed up royally.
They should have hired that man as the head coach.
And they should have acquired Derrick Henry as you're running back instead of letting him get to the Baltimore Ravens, because if you had him, you would have had a security blanket.
For Dak Prescott.
That way, when January rolls around and he's getting a bit fidgety with throwing the damn football, all you got to do is handed off to that bell cow and you're the big good I'm not even an NFL executive and I know this.
Come on, come on, either way you slice it. This ain't no defensive coordinator anymore. It's a six time champion. If y'all ain't coming.
To him with the head coaching offer, then Bill Belichick go ahead and do television. My man, you ain't Nonna coordinating no more. That's a step down. That's a step down. Last, but not least, moving on to the upcoming Paris Olympics, which kicks off this Friday. By the way, it was announced today that the US Open tennis champion Coco Golf will represent the United States as the female flag bearer. Golfer, was just twenty years of age, will be the first US tennis player to carry the flag. Deanna comes three years after Golf was forced to miss the Toek Olympics because she tested positive for COVID. She joins four time NBA champion Lebron James, who is the male flag bearer. Let me put it to you this way. First of all, congratulations to Coco gov She deserves it. I'm rooting for her. She's a champion now I love it. It's a beautiful, beautiful thing. And she's been a great, great citizen and a great ambassador for the sport of tennis, and she's only going to get better.
Having said all of that, let me just.
Say this to y'all before I walk away from today's show. We started out the show showing how an unarmed black woman age thirty six was gunned down in our own home by a police officer because she had a pot of hot water in her possession several feet away from him. We look at situations like that and we recognize how black people are being looked upon, not all the time, not even most of the time, but too many times periodically enough that it's become incredibly alarming.
In our society.
Don't you find it amazing, however, that with stuff like that going on, the United States of America's male flag bearer and its female.
Flag bearer are two black people.
Two African Americans who are elite, not just at their craft, but are elite as role models in today's generation.
Don't judge a book by its cover, or maybe in.
Some instances you should, and recognize the best amongst us is an assumption that is not far fetched. There's a whole bunch of black people everywhere that are great people and great human beings. A matter of fact, the vast majority of us are. Why doesn't somebody tell that story? Until next time, ladies and gentlemen, peace and love,
