So much.

You're listening to a Muma Mia podcast.

Mamma Mia acknowledges the traditional owners of land and borders that this podcast is recorded on from Mamma Mia. Welcome to the Spill, your daily pop culture fix. I'm Laura Brodnick, and today we are joined by a very special guest.

I'm Kelly mccaren. You might have heard me over on the You Beauty podcast. Poor m is poorly this week, so I am lucky enough to be filling in and chatting all things celebrity.

Well, we love when Kelly's on the show because she always has some hot takes. And it has been said before the two of us talk too much when we're together, wait to be separated. So if you look at this podcast and the runtime is an hour and twenty minutes, then we're sorry.

Can't blame it sick because everyone knows.

Everyone knows if we don't talk here or coming up on the show today, lots to talk about. We are giving our review on Joker Joker.

Oh, okay, Laura was just saying off much. She goes oh.

People keep saying that I am not pronouncing it properly, and I said, we're not French why would you be pronouncing it?

Actually just tried to say the name of it French like a fool, so exactly because I am not from France. Spoiler alert, joker for their do is that how a French people? If we have any French listeners, they are screaming into their cars right now.

Trust me, it sounds way worse when we try.

Well, we're giving our review on that movie because everyone is talking about it. It's going to be one of the biggest, not one of the best movies of the year, one of the biggest talking points of the year, and a very high profile celebrity divorce is on the horizon, and we need to get into that. But first, some very exciting movie news came out over the long weekend for us. Kelly, are your Princess Diaries fan? I feel like I can't tell this about you because you're the right age to be one, But also I don't know if that kind of movie is your jam.

No I loved it the first one, not the second one.

Oh you didn't like the second one?

No, I thought it was really boring.

I thought so many people love the second one.

I think I've seen the second one maybe once or once and a half or you know, if it was just playing on TV. But the first one. I love it. I've watched it so many times. I even watched it recently, like with my niece. I think, oh, really, yeah, it's just it's really cute.

Didn't we all think that we were the painter the mom?

Oh yeah, and so we'd like literally, my parents will always talk about me like blowing up balloons with paint in them and like throwing things at them in the backyard. And then once it like spurted all over our cat, and then our cat was like running around covered in paint.

The cat was fine.

I've never heard that be anyone's takeaway from the movie. But I love it. No, I love that that. I love that you relate to the mom I am. Everyone else is like, maybe I'm a princess. Maybe Julie Andrews will be my grandmother.

You know, I was the unhinged ARTI mum okay.

I mean she had a great house. So that's the loft that's important. I feel. So the actual news story here, apart from us just talking how much we love this movie, is that Anne Hathaway actually officially broke the news herself over the weekend, where she posted a screenshot of the official announcement from Variety announcing the third film was in the works, and also worked in some iconic lines from the film A Princess Shut Up. She had talked about before the fact that her production company was working on something, but there was nothing to report. But now it's officially going ahead. There's a production schedule, there's a script in the works. And Adele Lim who wrote Crazy Rich Asians, I think we can agree one of the best words the last ten years at least, and who also directed the movie joy Ride, is directing this movie.

So it might not be a flop if it's got a good director.

Yeah, it's got a great director, same producers as the first movie, so kind of bringing that same vibe. The only kind of wild card is that people are very insistent on Chris Pine reprising his role from the second movie of being her love interest, because you know it ended with them together but not getting married, and so people want the third movie because I haven't revealed any plot points yet. People want the third movie to be their wedding. And he has said previously that he would do a third Princess.

Get a few kids involved, or maybe maybe she's actually childless and focused on her career to be a plot twist.

Because it was quite interesting that the first movie ended without a wedding. Spoiler alert from a movie that came out like ten years ago, so more than that long yeah, way longer than that. Well that's all we know so far, but we'll keep you up to date with Princess Diary's news as an unfold.

And please let it not be a musical. Kanye West has reportedly split from his wife, bianquir Sen Sorry. TMZ claims that the famous rapper and his silent wife have been on the arts for quite some time and possibly planned to file for divorce. While no direct statement has been released, multiple sources with direct knowledge tell TMZ Yee Easy Ye and Bianca have been telling people around them that they split up a few weeks ago, with the yeasy architect heading down to Australia to spend time with her family. Since the split, the duo haven't been photographed together for almost two months, but neither party is yet to comment on the allegation and rumors.

Yes, so, I'm seeing all of these stories around the last couple of days, and it's hard to kind of know what's happening, because it feels that they're not in the business of sort of planting stories here or talking to sources all that sort of thing.

And TMZ generally are kind of on the money.

Well they usually they have sources everywhere, you know, all the different legal offices, hospitals, pr firms, all that sort of stuff, so they usually do know. But usually I feel like something like this with Kanye West, he would be the one to put the news out there, although he's been a lot quiet at the last couple of months.

Yeah, Like, actually that is so true. Usually you would just think that he would.

Go on like an unhinged rant online and just start like posting weird stuff.

There have been a lot of rumors in the past that they've been about to divorce, and that's never come to fruition. So but I think what people are really latching on too is that their relationship has been so much of a spectacle ever since it came out that they were together and this young Australian woman who had gone over to work in his company had married him shortly after him and Kim Kardashian had broken up, and the biggest story around them is that we've never really heard her speak, but we see her doing.

Weird out and about with him, not weird but public.

Yes, we see them out and about together, and she's wearing very revealing clothing, statement clothing and things, yes, all those sort of things. And there's been a lot of headlines and backlash around that. And the stick of that has always been that, unlike other women who get photographed their outfits become stories, is that we don't hear from her, so we don't know what her personality is, what her side of the story is, if she's invested in this, because she seems like to be just this very silent participant in the whole thing.

I mean, listen, I don't think anyone would be surprised if they broke up, including them.

I think what the cracks of this is is that her version of events and her idea of like what happened behind the scenes, and her take on this would be kind of like the biggest story that people.

Imagine, Oh my goodness, imagine if we could get her on the pod.

I mean, I would just love to know, because I honestly have no idea. There's a lot of times when these sort of celebrity stories unfold and you can piece together different bits of information.

To hear from the horse's mouth when she has been so silent through so many different con traverses and no one even really knows what she sounds like when she speaks.

Yeah exactly, but I do think that to make a mystery, well, yeah exactly, And it's little I guess has kept her almost protected in a way because there's been a few instances where she and Kanye West have been out together and paparazzi are chasing him or journalists are chasing him, and he's yea ye, I know his official name is y but we still call him Kanya.

Oh my goodness, is it?

Yeah, he officially changed it.

He changed his name to Eye.

Yeah exactly. That's why all the publications have that, because that's his whole name. But no one would know Kanye West.

Yeah, no one.

If someone said, oh, Yee, I'd be like, yes, I'd think that they were saying, like, yeah, I don't know, yeah.

That is his official name. But I think we've seen him have these like outbursts with paparazzi and journalists before, and you hear this kind of like all of his thoughts and emotions and what he's thinking. But she's always beside him so quiet, and I would love to tell all from her, but I don't think it's going to happen because it doesn't seem to be her style from what we know.

She's probably also signed like a million and has.

So many NDAs and legal docums that she can't speak on, and the power and balance behind the scenes is quite extreme, like it's different with Kim Kardashian because she has her own powerful empower in her own right. And the only reason I think she hasn't spoken out more is because of the kids that they share together. But then with Julia Fox, like she and Kanie West were only together for a brief amount of time, but she has since their relationship ended, has shared a lot of different information, and so I think that she was like one of the few people in his life who didn't sign an NDA, so she was able to say that he bought all her friends' bags, but also films them in a weird way and made them reenact over and over and made them like film it over and over again to get the reaction he wanted and was like very controlling behind na. Yeah, exactly dressing her up, and the fact that they also just never had sex or hooked up or anything like that, so it was very much a show for the paparazzi and for his image. But again, I think again, she has her own kind of like space in the entertainment industry and is like that's her kind of.

She has her own brand and own personality.

And has a certain amount of protection with Bianca. I just don't know if we'll here if this actually does happen in Divorce Goes story, if we'll hear her side of the story.

I would love too, though, Like let's all stay tuned because you never know. She might be a wild bit of gear, loves to party, loves to have a bit of a yap about They think she is Australian, Yeah, exactly, So you never know.

The Sow's a joke.

Pack and everyone loves when he's done. Well. A movie that we have been talking about for years here on the Spill, since it was first announced it was going ahead, is finally out in cinemas this week. Hopefully this is the last time I have to say this movie because people have been calling it.

Just call it The Joker too.

But it's not Joker too. It's Joker for.

People know what you're talking about, Joker too.

And that's the last time I'll attempt a French accent. So when the original Joker first came out, there was a bit of controversy around it of taking this very classic DC villain and making it a more grounded, realistic story. But it also became that.

Was the one with the big smile.

Heath led you, right, the original Joker movie. No, not even a little bit. It was the one with work in Phoenix and he went and he won an oscar for it.

But he goes way so serious.

That's a different movie. That's a Joker. No, but there's multiple Jokers. This is a completely different movie. It came out a few years ago and it stars Working Phoenix and there's no Batman, no DC villains, nothing like that.

Holy you've actually just blown my mind.

Actually couldn't tell if you were joking.

No, no, no, I genuinely I was like, they left it so long between films.

No, So this is a different movie. So this movie came out in twenty nineteen and it was Working Phoenix playing Arthur Fleck, who does become the Joker, but it's more of like there's no superheroes, no superpowers, nothing like that. It's just a man who has pretty extreme mental health issues. And it's kind of weird when you see him be like pushed to the brink by society. How he kind of lashes out and becomes a murder and becomes his character. He's also a stand up comic and becomes this of the joker. I'm really boiling that down to kind of a very.

Series, really selling it to me though, I kind of want to go home and watch it.

Well, it was a huge deal when it came out, not for you apparently, but for everyone else, because he became the highest grossing R rated film of all time until Deadpool came out this year and overtook it.

I would have just thought it was like a Marvel. Oh, one of those movies and.

Not one of those DC Marvel. Two different things we were giving. But there was a lot of controversy here at the time because there was a lot of critical acclaim instead of these box office records. People loved it, but there's also this idea that it was glamorizing violence and kind of like mail ego and all that sort of stuff.

And it's about health, wasn't it Well?

Yes, but also there was a conversation about like it was more nuanced conversation than this this idea of like saying like if you push men too far, this is what they can do, and all that sort of stuff. And there's some violence against women. There's a lot of different players to it, and some people didn't like it, but Waquin Phoenix did win a Best Actor Oscar for it, and so when it was announced they were making a sequel, it kind of seemed like a no brainer. That's the interesting thing about this movie is that on paper, everything's right, like everything should work. You have this movie come out, it's a critical success, everyone loves it. It feels like there's enough story there for another movie. Wack In Phoenix won an Oscar for it. Everyone agreed that it was his greatest role ever and the acting was incredible. And then you bring in Lady Gaga, who has also been nominated for an Oscar and is trying to sort of find her traction with acting.

I think she's incredible. All I've seen about this film is funny memes.

Okay, yeah, which is interesting because it's not really a funny movie.

No no, but people making fun.

Oh yeah, exactly, because the backlash has been pretty extreme. So it's done quite badly at the box office. The reviews are terrible, and they were terrible from the moment it started coming out at film festivals. But I went with a clear mind to sort of of course have my own thoughts on it. So wack in Phoenix's back as Arthur, and it picks up a few years after the events of the first movie. He's been in prison for a long time and his lawyer is trying to prove that he has mental health condition where he like he has a secondary personality pretty much, and he becomes the Jacker and he meets Lady Gaga, who's playing Harley Quinn, but they mostly call her Lee in the prison slush mental health facility.

That is that in the same character that Margot Robbie played.

Yes, but a very different version of the character. This dclash Marvel World. And I think also it was hard because Margo Robbie really made that character her great in those Suicide Squad movies, and she was great.

I've never seen them.

Oh well, but you think she looked great.

And that's the I really liked her costumes.

Yes, well, I can say she was great in those movies and both Suicide Squad movies, and she also did the Harley Quinn spinoff movie, which was amazing, and so there was a lot against Lady Gaga, but I think she does bring something interesting to the role. So they meet, they kind of have this very intense relationship. She's trying to get him out of prison. He's trying to prove himself in court that he's innocent and dispersed. In amongst all the darkness and the violence of this movie are some musical moments. So just bang our old school musical moments.

Like in a fun way, like because like I'm not a musical fan, but if it's fun and well done.

You no. I know how much you loved Angeliet, but this is not that kind of vibe. So they have these moments where they are singing to each other in real life, but then they kind of go into these fantasy sequences. Oh no, And I mean those were some of the greatest moments from the movie. So it's like, all of a sudden, they're in this dreary prison and there's violence and upset and it's all very dark and very kind of difficult to watch, and then all of a sudden, you're in this old school, big musical kind of thing where they're like Lady gagas and flares and makeup, or they're dancing, or they're having these big musical moments, but it's like a fantasy sequence.

Do you think the logic was Lady Gaga has one of the most incredible voices, let's just intertwine some music.

I think what it is is that they wanted to sort of show that we're seeing this very serious eide of their story, but in their minds they're having this very epic romance and they do that through song. And the thing is, I really I appreciate the effort. I really, I don't say that lightly. I appreciate the idea of taking a big swing and like going with an idea that could be a bit dangerous. But I think what Baby didn't work as much is that they haven't really committed to it. That they have these little musical moments sprinkled through, and then it's like they kind of get nervous about how off the rails the movie could go in that direction, so they pull it back. It's kind of like whiplash going back and forth between these two different forms of storytelling.

Okay, do you remember does it remind you of did you ever watch Gray's Anatomy? Yes, the infamous car accident episode that they turn into a song.

That's what is playing in my mind.

Did you like that episode?

Nod it? Oh my god, I love it.

I listened to that soundtrack the time it was It's very jarring to start off with awful. You have to watch it like six times. It really gets into your head.

I don't know who thought it was a good idea, but they just thought, you know what, some of the actors can kind of sing. Let's just like make one episode a musical episode. Yeah, that's what I feel like they've sort of done with this.

Yeah, it's hard because I think the idea for like Grey's Anatomy and shows like Buffy the Vampire Slagher doing musical episodes is that the idea is strange. Yes, but the idea is that the characters are always so heightened. It's like that moment in a musical where it's like they could burst into song and so but again also wanting to take like a big swing and try something different. So even though I know that the musical episode and Grey's Anatomy didn't really.

List stating people's minds.

Well, yeah, exactly, it's like you got it. Especially when you're on the air for twenty years, you've got to take a big swing. And I think with this Joker movie too, it's like they made this movie the first time that it's seen by many people as a perfect movie and the ending of a story and stuff. So if you're going to go back again to the same idea, you have to bring something different to the table. So I kind of get it. But the biggest sin of this movie, I've got to say, is not that it's got musical moments, not that it's violent. It's just that it's actually just a bit boring. Okay, so that was my biggest thin. My next question was did you like it? Like, would you recommend people going, say, God, it's hard, because if.

The cell is, but it's boring, probably not.

It just needed a really tight edit. And I say that as someone who needs a tight edit across all her work, Like I'm really bad at coming down my podcast and my writing, So I understand what it feels like is that they've got a bunch of people together and everyone had heaps of ideas that didn't kind of gel together, and they said, yes, let's do all of them.

And then anything well, and the really good point.

Doesn't just it just doesn't land. I think, so I wouldn't they don't see it like it's definitely it's an interesting take. It's an interesting form of filmmaking. And I think like some sources behind the scenes have said, like who is this movie for, and people said it's for Waquin Phoenix, like this is his vision and his show piece, and so people if you should just act, well, yeah, exactly. But the thing is, like it looks amazing. The performances from both Joaquin and Lady Gaga are incredible. It just it just doesn't land.

So I'm going to sum that up.

There, see it but when it comes out on TV and you can kind of like do a puzzle.

Or cook at the same time, potentially, yes, that's a great way to look at it.
