The Puget Sound Heart and Stroke Walk events are coming up in September. To talk about them, we invited two volunteers for the American Heart Association: Turner Prewitt, who is a heart disease survivor and longtime participant in the event, and Dr. Sharihar Heidary, who is a cardiologist and serves as a board member for the American Heart Association in the Puget Sound.

Eastridge Church in Seattle and Issaquah every year, for the past 21 years, has been donating 1,500 turkeys and bags of groceries every year to those in the community who need a little help to put a holiday meal on their table. To talk about this, we’ve invited Pastor Steve Jamison. He and his wife, Cheryl, serve as the Lead Pastors of Eastridge Church. Pastor Steve Jamison also hosts Eastridge today on KGNW The Word Seattle, Saturdays at 3:30 pm and Sundays at 9 am and 8 pm.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among families, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. We were recently joined by Danielle Madrid, Founder and Executive Director of Havens Community Connections, and Michelle Hollomon, Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Author of "Losers, Users and Abusers and the Women Who Love Them - How to Break Free from Destructive Relationships and Get the Love You Want."

The latest STEM statistics show that women remain underrepresented in both Engineering and Technology degrees and careers. While women receive over half of bachelor’s degrees awarded in the biological sciences, they receive far fewer in the computer sciences, engineering, physics, and mathematics and statistics. Women remain underrepresented in the STEM workforce with the greatest disparities occurring in engineering and computer and mathematical sciences. Cathi Rodgveller noticed this disparity and figured she needed to do something about it. And she did! She created IGNITE. IGNITE stands for Inspiring Girls Now In Technology Evolution. Cathi Rodgveller, CEO and Founder of IGNITE, recently visited our show and she was joined by Ali Wulf, who works at TUNE, and Michele Amato, who teaches Computer Science at Broadview-Thomson K-8 in Seattle.
