If you're on a financial assistance program, you can get to those places of need a little bit easier.  Andrea Kiepe is the TAP coordinator for Metro Transit, and she joins the show to explain how those in financial need can take advantage of reduced rates on transit rides.

Sheletta also caught up with an old friend in Krissy Ott, reminiscing on their time together in junior high and what brings her to the Twin Cities this weekend.

Flavored e-cigarettes, vaping, hookah, many nicotine products are being promoted to our youth and the people at North Point Health and Wellness including Sena Geleto, a youth advocate for MN Smoke Free Generation and Community Outreach Coordinator among others are asking legislators to help combat the massive deficit being faced against the money being spent to advertise these flavored tobacco products to our children.

We also dive into other topics and news stories like the dangers of electric blankets and lithium batteries.

He joins us to give us the details and the access to that coverage including how his team is getting the word out about this assistance option.

Had the chance to talk to Reverend Tim Christopher on how we handle youth violence and taking disciplinary action within our schools given the shaking up of SRO’s in many schools in Minnesota. Then we called up Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara talking about the new protocol with teens and armed robberies and their response level with less urgent calls. 

It was announced this week that the Minneapolis Police Department is cracking down on how they handle teens and armed robberies being carried out by them. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara joined us to talk about what his department is doing, how they are handling car thefts and the protocol with how they are responding to emergencies. 

It's no secret that there are a lot of troubled teenagers and communities out in the surrounding Minneapolis neighborhoods but in part thanks to people like Rev. Tim Christopher and many others, there are programs pushing to make a difference in better steering these children towards better adults along the way. He joins to talk about these programs, his perspective on what it takes to discipline these children but in a constructive way through programs and how people can better serve their communities in 2024. 

Dave Schrader filled in for Sheletta this Saturday. We start the show reflecting on the second annual Black Entrepreneurship Day at the State Capital that took place yesterday with Sheletta at the helm of this great event. We also looked at a story of a bus driver who received a DWI while driving off-road. Also, we talk about the efforts Hennepin County is making to assure the health of those who live within a home that consists of lead paint with its walls and discuss ways in which people can seek out funding from Hennepin County to have the lead removed.

Even in 2024, there are homes that contain lead within their confines and we look at and reflect on Amy Waller who is the Public Health Nurse for Hennepin County and crunch some of the numbers regarding the amount of homes that still contain lead and the funding of which Hennepin County can assist with. 

Dave shares a story from Friday where a bus driver is facing a DWI for operating a school bus under the influence. He also shares a personal experience with something similar to this and what needs to be done to hold staffers accountable in situations such as this.

Final stretch on this Saturday with Sheletta we talked health within our own walls at home with Amy Waller who is Public Health Nurse for Hennepin County - talking about the services Hennepin County offer to people's homes that consist of lead and ways we can prevent not only us, but our children from lead poisoning. We also talked to State Representative Liz Lee, who in such a short time has made many impacts in the legislature when it comes to computer science, health equity and more! Finally, Steve Thomson shares his thoughts on We Are the World - has he watched the new documentary? and we get a Super Bowl prediction.

She has hit the ground running since joining the state legislature last year from being the first Hmong woman and for District 67A, the first woman ever to hold the position, we talked to Minnesota State Representative Liz Lee - she's been actively working to have various bills passed this previous year and in 2024 towards computer science, health equity and doing so much in her short time so far in Minnesota. 

There is a great event coming up next week where women who own businesses and are looking to expand profit for their business can attend an event with the Twin Cities eWomen Network , Managing Director for the Twin Cities area, Jen Grant joins Sheletta in studio to talk about this event and how her group is helping build women owned businesses including an incentive that you don't want to miss with this event. 

We talked to Amy Waller about the dangers of lead in the home, not only for us as parents but our children as well. Amy works for Hennepin County as a Public Health Nurse and she discusses ways in which we can better serve our children by reaching out to Hennepin County to remove lead from our homes and financing that coincides with that process. 

Another hour into this edition of the Sheletta Show we talked to Dr Eileen Crespo of Delta Dental about their ‘Smiles @ School’ program and what Delta Dental is doing to emphasize the importance of hygiene for children. Then we chatted with Jen Grant, Managing Director for the eWomen Network in the Twin Cities, she along with Sheletta are helping women develop connections through networking through an in-person event on Thursday. She joins Sheletta in studio for more information on this event and the impact eWomen's Network is making for female business owners everywhere. Also we talked gospel with Reverend Pierce

We also talked to the Senior Vice President of Comcast - Midwest Region Kalyn Hove about her and Comcast stepping into the community to help, Black Entrepreneurs Day, and partnering with Peacock for the Olympics. Finally, Sheletta shares a story about ripped jeans from this past week. 

Giving people access to internet essentials and connectivity for those who cannot afford the ability to stay connected is important and nobody knows that more than Comcast, so we talked to Kalyn Hove, Senior Vice President of Comcast - Midwest Region about the difference her and her team are making in the community and preview what Comcast is doing to contribute to black owned businesses at the Black Entrepreneurs Day event at the capitol and we also preview the 2024 Olympics in partnership with Peacock.

Walter Dillon, is one of many black business owners partaking in the Black Entrepreneurs Day at the state capitol on Friday. He shares his story on the trials he has faced owning a shoe store after five burglaries in six months and he talks about his perseverance to keep his dream alive amid those setbacks and helps those small businesses avoid the same situation. He also touches on his mission to go to bat for these owners.
