Peter spent Tuesday at the Giants-Lions joint practice and returns with first-hand accounts of another fight, Malik Nabers' dominance, and the way Dan Campbell's team is carrying itself a year after they were America's feel good story. Giants HC Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen each visit with Peter, and give insight into a 2024 season that has many fans of Big Blue wondering about.
The Season with Peter Scheger is a production of the NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio.
What's Up, everybody, Welcome to another episode of the Season with Peter Schreger. I am Peter Schreger. I just stepped into my Brooklyn apartment after spending all morning in the early afternoon at New York Giants Detroit Lions joint practice number two. Aaron wan Kaufman is joining me, my wonderful producer.
Aaron, I've got pep in my step. I saw a real football today and it was awesome. Let me just give you a quick breakdown of practice. Some dispatches coming.
Into this thing. Yesterday. The storyline was that there was a bunch of fights and there was a question as to whether they would practice and pads again today and go all out because yesterday there were fights. No one got hurt, thank god. But one of the key things was Daniel Jones got involved in a fight in a Red Jersey yesterday, came in, popped himself in and he didn't do much, but the fact that he was there, and the question was, you know, what's he doing? And the other question is do we kind of like it? Daniel Jones not exactly known as that guy. Uh spent the entire offseason with Hard Knocks, you know, being on them talking about other quarterbacks and gosh it was and obviously everyone seems to be writing off Daniel Jones. Then sure enough there was in the mix yesterday. We fast forward to today, which is Tuesday, and I get there with my colleague Kyle Brandt. We get there nice and early, and there's like a buzz in the air because it's open to fans. These two teams would add it head to head, and today it's like round two. Let me explain the Lions. There's something there to them that maybe we at home look at it as this cool Cinderella story, but like they kind of walked that walk, and they kind of talked that. If I'm being honest, like I'm watching these guys, they carry themselves as a team that went to the NFC Championship game. They've got a bunch of alphas in that roster. I mean, we were talking about Panay Suwell might be the most horrifying offensive tackle outside of Trent Williams Aden Hutchinson. He does the thing where he tucks his jersey in so you could see his abs like he's like an old school like, you know, he rolls it up old school defensive linemen, like from a different era, and he is coming into his own Jamier Gibbs, he walks that walk. He is that guy. And then there's a mon Ross Saint Brown, who his father is a mister World bodybuilder, and he kind of walks that walk in if he saw the receiver on Netflix.
He knows sixteen names of receivers who were taken before him, and he knows every single one of those players when they were selected, in what college they went to. They have a giant chip on their shoulder, and they come in here and they've got a bunch of swagger, and you know, they walk in and last year it was this aw shucks team and they.
No no, no, no, no, no. They are one of the biggest teams in the league. They're one of the most physical teams in the league. And as they got to the to New Jersey yesterday, I think there were some issues with the with the plane on the tarmac. I don't know all the details there, but like there was a pissed off vibe from the Lions, which I kind of like, and it's one of these where it's like, last year wasn't a one year wonder. Last year wasn't one of these deals where it was an overnight success. They all got paid this offseason, a lot of them, whether it be Decker or whether it be Aman Ross, Saint Brown, or whether it be Jared Goff, they all got paid. And like these are made men and they are no longer the Hunters and this aw shuck story. They're gonna play at noon on Thanksgiving. Let's just hope they don't get blown out that one day when we see them on national TV. This is one of the best teams in football.
So they come in with all this and Aaron, I'll tell you this, a lot of Lions fans there. You live in Brooklyn, you grew up on the like, like I see.
A lot of Steelers fans everywhere I go. I see, of course, Eagles fans everywhere we go, especially in New York. I don't see a ton of Lions fans. Like Lions fans showed up at these joint practices and it was cool, Like you get there and you've got this Lions team that comes in like they're the big bad you know, bad asses and all this stuff. Then there's this Giants team that's like, we've just been beating up, talked down to, ridiculed, made a mockery of over the past twelve months. And it's like, what if we had a healthy quarterback, what if we beefed up our offensive line, what if we added some talented players on the what if we added Brian Burns, one of the best pass users in football. Like what You've got these two different teams with chips on their shoulders. They've only been practicing against each other the first few weeks of training camp. They finally get after it and day one their's fisticos, it gets broken up. Day two it starts off and I'm telling you, eron. I don't know if I've ever seen a receiver put on a show like Milik Neighbors put on today. And I haven't read Twitter, I haven't read Giants Twitter. I haven't done anything literally off the practice field talking to you right now. I think Milik Neighbors had I counted seven different targets when the Ones are playing the Ones. I think he caught all seven having a field day on Terry and Arnold, the rookie from the Detroit Lions, having a field day on you know, I saw Kirby Joseph, who's a star player on the Lions. He was just catching balls over him.
So Milik Neighbors is eating them alive, eating them alive, eating them alive. Milik Neighbors catches a ball and on the way back to the huddle like taps Terry and Arnold, who a tap is more than a tap.
Terry Arnold, who is a first round pick out of Alabama. I remember Neighbors, the first round pick out at LSU.
Arnold pushes him and then Neighbors immediately gets involved and pushes back, and then all of a sudden, there's punches being thrown right in front of us as we're set up there for Good Morning Football. And this is the number six pick in the draft, and I think the number twenty three pick in the draft. Neighbors and Arnold, and then Kirby Joseph, who was an interception machine last year for the Lions.
He's a recent, you know, draft pick out of Illinois. He comes flying in and it's a haha, it's a fracas, it's whatever you want to call it. And I'm watching this with Kyle Brant, We're like, this is freaking awesome. Now, do we want any to get hurt? No, but the intensity was so high and I don't have I don't do the keep track of like what it was. But like Daniel Jones looks really good, Jared Golf looked really good. But Malik Neighbors put on an absolute show. And from everyone who is there, on Monday is the second straight day he's done that. Aaron, are we ready to get all aboard the Malik Neighbors hype train? Okay?
So I also just finished watching episode five of almost House of the Dragon.
Okay, I heard a lot of critical response from House to the Dragon, though.
People aren't I did finish watching the House of the Dragon, but just finished the end of Hard Knocks because I missed the final episode last week and so I watched it today.
And I mean, Neighbors looks incredible, amazing, And that was in a June practice you were watching.
Yeah, And I've seen a couple of clips of you know, some big high overhead ball like catches that he's made from Daneer Jones so far, and you know, we're getting a lot of Marvin Harrison talk and and we're getting we're seeing Caleb on the field with Rome and I want Malik to be incredible. I want I'm not a Giants fan, that's fine. I want the days of like Obj catching the one handed passes, like making the Giants exciting. So I am I would love it if he's great.
You watched Tard Knocks. There was this really cool distinction made during the draft process of whether this guy is a diva or this guy is one of those dudes that just has an incredible competitive edge because apparently when he was at LSU, if he didn't get the ball, he barked and he complained and he would let everyone know about it. And that's a pain in the ass for a quarterback, especially if you're gonna be a rookie in the NFL.
But Brian Dable felt comfortable with it. That's a great segue to our first interview.
Here.
We did two interview and I'm going to toss to one of them. I asked Dabel exactly this question. This was right before practice. Brian Dabele sat with us, and I'll give you a couple of visuals here. Brian Dabel's down maybe sixty pounds. He looks incredible.
He said that it's pilates not putting a ton of food in his mouth, calorie watching, and he says, Zen, just being chill, this is what it was. It helped him lose weight, so this is what is. He also says he yo Yo's way up and way down over the course of his life. So he could put on the sixty real quick, he said, And I'm like, please, don't, please, don't do that. Like you look great, you look the best you've looked.
But I asked him just that question about neighbors, about why he was so convicted in him, and why he believed that this guy is all the good things of competitiveness, not the bad things that you get with some wide receivers, especially if they're not getting the ball early on.
I love this guy, Brian Dable. We've had him on the podcast before. I consider him a friend. If I'm a little too chummy with him, you got to Understan and why. I've known this guy for twenty years and I really respect the hot of him and I'm rooting for him to get back to where he was when he was Coach of the Year two years ago, as opposed to last year where the team took a dip with no further ado. Here was Brian Dable earlier today before Giants practice.
We're thrilled now to have the twenty twenty two NFL Coach of the Year, the head coach of the New York Giants and a friend of the show, mister Brian Table.
What's what's up, Dave's how're you doing?
Thanks for having me, guys, you appreciate it.
Happy to have you.
Thrilled that you and still to look at you. You look great. You're tam there's like half of you that's this year. You look awesome. How do you feel? Yeah?
I feel great.
That's what happens when you drop some pounds and you know you're you know, you look at the BMI chart and mine was off the chart, so I just I just had to get it back to where it says overweight.
Is that right?
Where I'm sitting at overweight right now? But yeah, feel good. Had a good camp and look forward to today.
I know you you're a guy who wants to talk about football. Let's talk about the quarterbacks. Let's talk about it. The last thing you want is focus on your physical peas, and yet it is so inspiring.
It motivates all of us when we see what you showed up to a camp this year.
How are you handling all the talk about you personally and your your looks?
Yeah, I disregard that because because I know it's going to go up pretty quickly.
Are you already resigning to that fact season that I have.
We're on a steady climb at the sense of starting riting camp.
Yeah, but you know this weather helps to keep it down. You sweat it out.
Uh yeah, but and our focus is on our team and trying to get better and had.
To get some new clothes. But save save the old.
Ones, know you do save the big ones. You know.
This is what's crazy about this is Dan Campbell after yesterday's practice, of all practices, He's asked about your appearance and your weight, and Dan's like, that's Dave's man.
He's up, he's.
Down, he's up, he's down, And like he called you a chameleon, like whatever the circumstances you fit to. But I also think that's relatable to fans. It's like we have like heavy season and light season, you get it.
Yeah, yeah, and you know lately it's been heavy season. But DC is great.
You know, we worked together at Miami, got a lot of good stories on him as well. You did a great impression of it, by the way. Yeah, solid impression. But yeah, that's just the way it goes.
Let me ask you football stuff, because yesterday, I mean the stuff that the local media of New York's time was like most spirited practice in ten years.
You had straight Han Victor Cruz, Phil Simms.
Here and like, here comes this Lions team that went to the NFC Championship a year ago, coming in as the hunted and the Giants are like, we're not, you know, walking into our building and bushing us around. Like you have to love even if there are fights, you have to love that your team came ready to play.
Yeah, and that's why we practice against Detroit. One of my appreciation for Dan and how he runs things and and their team ultimately, but it was a competitive, spirited practice. You know, we got to clean up a few things here technique wise, clean up some stuff on the in the scuffles. We don't want a bunch of those, but definitely got a lot of good work out of it yesterday and looking to do the same today.
You know, you see the scuffles in every camp. You do not often see a guy in a red jersey flying into the scuffle to shove a guy who's entangled up with his teammate. You don't want to see Daniel Jones get hurt. You want to seem that dude. It's bad ass to see the quarterback and have his guys back. I think the fans relate. We liked it.
There's got to be part of you that says hell yes, number eight.
Yeah.
You know he got in there, and you know it was a little scuffle with the.
Linemen going on, and I didn't exactly see what happened after that. And he's sitting over the side and I said, what are you going to do in that pilot?
He said, I got my guys back. I said, all right, just just make sure you're asked, don't get hurt.
So yeah, I think the guys have a lot of respect for him. They always have the way he approaches things. But there's definitely something cool for the lineman and for the defensive guys to see with their quarterback.
You remember in Major League where Wesley Snipes makes the basket catch and the magic goes nice catch.
Hays don't ever bleep and do it against great great Lou Brown exactly.
I love it.
Outstanding movie.
Hey, going back to this hard knocks thing at the combine, the night before the wide receivers work out, this.
Is before we see any of them.
You're talking to your fellow coaches and scouts and being like, I was up all night watching Elite Neighbors that I love Scott so great. Then the second point it's like you see Neighbors, and then the final.
Episode you're like, I spooked.
To coach Saban, he said, two players are guys that just terrorized him, brock Bowers at Georgia and Neighbors at LSU. It felt like wire to wire Neighbors was your guy. You deny on him, now you got him in the building, talk about your love for him in the pre draft process and what you've seen now that he's here.
Yeah, that was some of my first exposure.
You know, you're getting done with the season, doing some end of the year things, and then you know all the scouts are way ahead of you, so you bring your computers. You start watching guys, and I started watching him, and I just kept watching him.
I didn't watch a whole lot of other players when I was there. I watched them near all his tape.
Yeah, because you love the style that he plays with the competitive spirit. He's big, physical, he made plays down the field, catching runs, So kind of got a little addicted to watching, you know how he played in a competitive obviously league. And then you know, the more you watch him and you go back and you look at different things. You know, he was a guy that you know, was obviously high on my list and our list as the process went on. He's he's done a good job since he's been here. He's picked things well, picked up things well, and he's had a good start day.
Yeah, there's this cool delineation in the episode where he's a talker, he wants the ball, and I think you say, like there's a difference between being selfish and there's just having been a dog.
Yeah, and this guy, like we're gonna lean on.
He's a dog.
He's not a talker. He's not a deva like this a guy who just is competitive as hell.
He really is.
And again, I'm happy he's here. We've developed a strong relationship. You know, since he's been here through now, he sees the game well for a young player. You know, I asked him things that he likes or defenders that he's going against. I think he's elevated the receiver room. The guys have a lot of respect for him. I know the quarterback does, so you know, I'm glad we have him.
Peter, And I remember a couple of years ago, coach being at NFL honors and you're there, wife, and you're all dressed up some very exciting nights, get your name called, like, oh my god, I've made it. I've worked so hard for this. Last year was not the year you wanted. And now we're in twenty twenty four. Where are you psychologically? You've been all over the place in so many good ways and so many challenging ways.
How are you feeling?
Yeah, I feel great again. This is my twenty fourth year in the National Football League.
Amazing.
I've experienced, you.
Know, the highs, the highs and the lowest lows, and that's the NFL and and how you handle it and get ready for the next season, that's what's the most important. Have a lot of confidence in the people that we have in our building, the staff members, the players were growing each day. You know, I bought a brand new suit for that for that night. That costs me a lot of money. And now you know, I can't adjust it right now because it's so big.
So that's right now.
So that's why I got to go ahead and put it back on.
But feel good.
I've had a good camp, energized, look forward to getting going here.
Can I can I go into kind of the psychology of the off season where all right, Tae Kwon's walking out, but we're gonna bring in run In, We're gonna bring in illumin or we're gonna bring in Brian. These guys are on the lines, defensive line, offensive line, and they have a certain grit to them. Was that a statement with here's how we're building our team for twenty twenty four.
We're gonna protect Daniel, but we're.
Also going to bring in guys that'll get a little dirty in the trenches.
Yeah. Absolutely, Then that's where it starts, as you know, Peter offense and defensive line and having a mentality. But you know, the skill guys we brought into and i'd say this rookie class, obviously we.
Haven't played a game. They have some of that as well.
There's some grit, some toughness like that Tyrone Tracy.
Yeah, and you know they've all contributed so far in camp. You know, we'll see how it goes once we start these preseason games. But you know, toughness was something that we really wanted to improve from the year before.
I have to ask, as you mentioned it, Dan Campbell is here.
You guys are practicing again.
You guys got a lot of history.
You straight upset.
I got a lot of Dan Campbell's stories back.
In their day.
Give us one DC story when maybe you knew he was a little different.
Yeah it was.
You know, Tony Sprowno got rest of soul. Yeah, I've said this before. He's like, I have a young guy that has played that I think will make a tremendous coach.
You don't have to If you don't.
Want to hire him or recommend hire him, that's fine, but I'd like you to talk to him. So I sat down with him for the interview process, and within five minutes, you know, he's out of breath, there's chairs moving around, He's showing me all these techniques.
And after about the first five minutes it went for a while. I said, this is the guy. He's relatable, he's got a toughness about him. He's a hiccup, a coach.
You know, he's a former player but sees the game the right way. I really enjoyed my time with him. You know, power cleaner every morning watch. You know, it looks like he can go out there and put it on some guys right now. But great family, got a great appreciation, have state friends for the years. So happy for him when he got that opportunity. But you know he's he was out of breath pretty quick in that interview.
My last question for you, it's about this team here, this franchise, this season, in particular one hundred years the New York Giants. We always talk about the crown jewel franchises of the league. You talk about all the Lombardi trophies, all the history, and how cool it's been to see a lot of those faces here at the building even yesterday, having straight hand and Cruise and Sims and those guys. Does it feel like this is a special season from your from your cock bit like you're looking at do you know the overall significance knowing what this means to this franchise and to these fans.
Yeah, I certainly respect that. Obviously historic. You know, my focus is really on this year. Well, weak control but have a tremendous amount of respect for all the people that have come before us, our ownership group.
You know again, you.
See the guys that come out here and they've kind of laid a foundation of some of those successful teams.
But you know, our focus has to be on on getting.
Better, focusing on this year, doing the things we need.
To do with respect to the past.
Sure sure Vikings week one, Vikings week one, Vikings week one, one o'clock start.
I like that good preseason here, coach.
We're wishing you the best of luck, and I'm gonna disagree with you.
I don't think you put the weight back on. I think you are.
This is the time it stays off.
Discipline. Man, you are not gonna yo yo. I will put on the weight. I know I will every season. You will not, though you are going to be discipline. Then the Pilates place in y Coffin is gonna give you that one free class because you've only mentioned them thirteen times in the last two weeks.
I'd appreciate that. I'd also take that bet On take the bet.
I'll take it, Beck too.
We're gonna hear that Jerry Springer bell out in the middle of practice today, A bunch of times thing. Jerry, Jerry, Jerry.
So that's Dabele. I mean, you hear him. He's we didn't really he wasn't looking to.
Talk about his physical appearance. I probably asked four questions about it. Kyle asked the fifth one.
At that point. He's like, all right, we talking about football, like I think we're good. He's not comfortable in that, but I will say this, he looks great. You're gonna see him. It's gonna be a story. Obviously it already is. But I also think it's interesting what he says about this team and what they really preach this year, and it was toughness. So you bring in John Runyon, you bring in Illumina, or you bring Brian Burns. These are line of scrimmage guys that might have been missing the last few years. And you surround Daniel Jones and you hope that he elevates. Really dug talking to daball, like I said, Another friend of the show is Joe Shane. Our first year on this podcast, Joe Shane, the general manager, came on for the Giants. He was one of our first guests and he was awesome. America knows him now from Hard Knocks. It was cool to have him on before practice also with no further ado. Joe Shane, the General manager of the New York Giants, talking about his new squad in twenty twenty four.
We are here in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where I'm joined by Kyle and we're joining with the general manager of the New York Giants going into his third year as the GM, mister Joe Shane.
Welcome to the show.
Joe.
Yeah, thanks for having me.
Guys, we're thrilled to have you.
We're now calling you smoking Joe Shane. After yesterday and then all you're involved, Let's let's get into this. Okay, yesterday everybody saw it around the world. Now it's it's everywhere on the internet. Giants Lions have a joint practice and there's many dust ups, fracases, everything. Hey, donny Brook, like talk take us through yesterday's practice in that regard.
Yeah, last year we scrimmaged against Detroit for two days and we didn't have there were no fights, there was nothing.
It was great.
Everything went smooth, and early on in practice there was a couple of hits and things got.
Heated early on. So yeah, I mean from my position, I just want to.
Get good work and everybody come out of practice healthy. That's the biggest concern for me, and that's why we're practicing with Detroit. Like a lot of respect for Dan Campbell and his staff, Brad Holmes and what they're doing up in Detroit. So hopefully we don't have as much extracurricular activity today as.
We did yesterday.
Now, there was another little part of this. Kyle didn't mentioned.
There was a skirmish on the sideline, and there wasn't the security officer, it wasn't the offensive lineman, the general manager, Joe Shane you got involved and broke it up.
But I got scared when I see a man with no helmet on the field.
What happened?
Yeah, yeah, again, we were doing a red zone period and you know, our whole team was on one side, theirs was on another. So I was right there by the ruckus or whatever is going on. I was just trying to keep our guys back. So I think got a little bit of overblown in terms of my involvement, and you know, I know my strengths and weaknesses. I was just trying to keep our guys back. In no way was I getting involved.
That's never been seen, you know, Like we were joking.
We were joking earlier, like you hanging on a cave on Thibodaux.
Like or Jeff ben Gundy's leg. It's not like that.
I thought maybe you would walk across the field and challenge Brad Holmes to a fight, right, that's how you do it.
So Brad's in the same boat as me. We just want to get good work and get out of there healthy.
And you did it.
But I'm honestly Joe, like it's it's playing very well for you in like the court of public opinion.
It's just cool that you were there and not afraid.
And you these are your players, you sign them, you want to protect them, and you did.
I think it's cool, no doubt, no doubt. Again, I just want to get out healthy.
I don't want somebody, you know, getta stupid to hit somebody with a helmet on with your fist, things like that, and guys can get caught up in the moment. And you know, I was just trying to prevent anything like new happening.
Yeah, can I can I just geek out? Can we talk about Malik neighbors a little bit. Yeah, I know, I know, there's.
Just like we have to be we have to temper our expectations. You're a rookie.
But like I just see it from Afar.
I haven't been the Giants camp yet, it looks like he's the real deal in practice.
Yeah, No, he's uh, he's been really good. He's had a good couple of weeks here. He did a good job yesterday. Again, he keeps stacked good days together.
And it's it's it's what we saw at LSU.
I mean, he was a he was a dominant player in the SEC and he's come out here. He's learned the offense probably better than we expected. We're able to move him around and he's he's he's handling a lot right now and he's able to go out and execute.
So yeah, it's definitely encouraging where he is right now.
Hey, and I don't mean to bring up the fracases, but I'm gonna do this constructively.
Daniel Jones is being talked about too, Okay, because the.
Guy in the red jersey, the franchise quarterback, is in their shoving defensive lineman and showing fear. And he's got he's got a beard, now showing no fear. He's got a beard.
Now.
People online are like, wow, Daniel Jones coming up differently. Obviously you don't want them to get hurt. But Peter and I agree that it was a moment for Daniel Jones, like for the fans, for the teammates that I'm here to fight too, and I got my guys back.
Like, how was that interpreted by you guys and the coaches stuff?
Yeah, I think the players definitely probably appreciated it. You know, his teammates seeing him getting in there from from again, from my seat and my perspective where I was, I was like, get.
Out of there, get out of there.
You know, Red Jersey coming off in acl like, yeah, We're got out of there. But you know, sometimes your natural instinct kicks in and when your teammates need your help, you know, that's your natural instinct to go help.
And that's what Daniel did, and luckily he.
Got out of there, and again we just I just want to get out of here healthy and get some good work in.
You know, the Giants off season, obviously Saquon was the big headline that he's no longer here, but quietly, you guys had illuminor you had Runyon, you had Motor Singletary, we're a weekend to practices. We've now got these joint practices. How are you feeling with the new addition so far?
Yeah, I feel really good.
And and Brian Burns, you know, we traded for him too, and he's been really good in camp. But Motor we had familiarity with from Buffalo.
Illumini or Runyon. They've they've performed very well. So all three of.
Those guys what we expected to get in terms of production and the way they look on the grass has been really good. And not even that just from a culture standpoint, who they are as people and what they bring to the table as veteran players with leadership, you know, as we're trying to turn this around, you know, they've been phenomenal.
I just have to take it time. And it's Chris Hogan right there, the super Bowl winner. What are you doing? Chris? Miami would have been Miami too. Yeah, I'm having a great voice.
How are you?
We're in the middle talking to Joe family.
With me.
What's up?
Bro?
You play the sweet Sweet lacrosse? You play last? Yeah, we love you guys.
Crazy the man dude like the Penn State mom myth we love.
This legend here legend Brian Dane.
Yeah, that's the cut seven eleven.
He is always open, always open.
Hard Knocked tonight, here's our other star of Hard Knock.
So I promised we weren't going to bring it up, but you mentioned Hard Knocks Joe.
We know y'all. All you want to do is take care of your family and come to work and do your job in private.
That's that's how you operate. You weren't allowed to do that. It was Look, it's forced upon you. You guys don't choose. You were in the show a lot talking about really really important private things on television.
What was that experience?
Like, Yeah, going through the process that had never been done before.
So you get used to the cameras and you just it's business as usual, not knowing what the end products gonna be.
So credit to NFL Films. I thought they did a very good job.
I would say the fans and everybody would say, boy, they showed a little.
Bit more than we thought they would.
And yeah, not not all of it was comfortable, and there's some some conversations that are you know, you wish they would remain private, but they were. They were part of the show, and you know we had editorial input, not control. So you know, there were some things that were I was like, I'm not real comfortable with that, but you know it was in the show. But I think all in all, NFL Films they did a great job. You know, when you're doing it too, you have a lot of private conversations leading up to the draft or free agency on strategy and you're always worried about as somebody from you know, it is again to get out, and they didn't you know, the confidence and trust that we had an NFL Films and they had in us. You know, I think it came out well, you know, the five episodes I thought were really good.
And again it was a dead media cycle.
And at that time when it came out, so you're on vacation and everybody's critiquing everything that you're doing.
It was dead.
And then you guys went on it right to light.
And it was like a supermarket recognition like where are we at air airport?
Recognized? Yeah, no, it was good out of the country, hats under the radar. You know, that's how I prefer to.
Be so so listen regarding sake one, you are the kind of guy in this organization will say, you know, we wish him nothing but the best and all that, but really not really because you don't want him to have a good access this year on the football field of the Eagles, Like that's a rival he's going to.
He's coming into met life. I think it's week five or week six, like pretty early.
What is that going to be like on that game day for you and coach Dab's seeing Saquon I'm in the Eagles playing against you.
Yeah, it'll be tough.
Always done for the franchise, the number two pick, you know, it has a lot of production here and he's a great kid.
Like I love Taquon. Again, there's there's a business side to it.
So yeah, that's why I told him, I wish you the best of luck except twice a year, and again, you can't resign everybody and where we are and building the team and is. As much as you like to keep everybody, that's just not the reality of the situation. So yeah, wish him luck other than two times.
A year when we play him.
The cool deal is about this season. It's the one hundredth year of the New York Giants. It's a big initiative here. Yesterday I practiced Strahan, Victor Cruz, Phil Simms. Like a lot of the legends are showing their face. This feels like a season of significance for this organization.
Do you carry that weight as well?
Yeah?
Absolutely absolutely.
And I love coming to work every day and you see the history of the organization and you know some of the greats that come out to practice, and my son played in the NFL Flag Football Championship in Canton and going through the Hall of Fame. Yeah, yeah, just all the giants that are in the Hall of Fame, and you know, just really cool.
And you know, I just this one hundred.
Season and being able to see how it was built on hard knocks and then you know all the our you know, the business side of the marketing is doing for you know, the greats.
That came before, you know, this team.
You know, I just think it's a phenomenal time to have the organization under the spotlight.
And you know, I'm looking forward seeing how we do.
We are too, and we haven't seen him yet, but we heard the head coach lost like a ton of weights.
Yeah great, Yeah, he looks great. He looks phenomenal.
Yeah, awesome. Ready to win, he's ready to wain.
Yeah, he's taking plot. He's now he's big into that. Oh yeah, the big plot's going out.
This Pilotate's place in has gotten such free we're gonna be wearing a patch on our shirts.
Like.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm hoping he's getting thirty times. I hope he's getting some free set that the marketing they.
Exactly exactly before we let you go.
Daniel Jones season, let's call it what it is, like, he's got a he's got to deliver.
How are you feeling about DJ as we head into this twenty twenty four campaign.
Yeah, I feel good about him again. He had a really good day yesterday. He stacked some good days together last week. And again it's it's only natural with the position to to have a little russ when you're coming back off in HL and you know, behind an offensive line. He didn't take any team reps this spring, so early on he's getting used to, you know, the receivers, the timing, some of the stuff we're doing offensively along with the offensive line.
So I think he's really.
Progressing in the right direction and you know, I think with the you know, the upgrades the offensive line and some of the offensive weapons, you know, we're expecting big.
Things when you've got when you've got Dave's going like, yeah, we could trade up for Jada and Jayden Daniels or you got you know, Mike Kafka saying, I like Drake May, like I know, Daniel Jones is a private guy, and he's install learning. He's focused, Like do you go out of your way to say, hey, there's gonna be stuff on this, like just do your job and everything's gonna.
Be on that.
Yeah, I think whichever, maybe episode four when I was talking to Chris Mary, I mean, that was the exact conversation I had with Daniel and you know Dave's and I think the communication with the players and shooting him straight is very important, so so they're not surprised door you know, caught out of the you know, I'll mentioned Daniel going to the cafeteria and seeing one of those quarterbacks, So we just wanted to be upfront with him. And again, some of those conversations were early March. Daniel wasn't even running at the time. So again, every patient reacts differently to start of threes, and we didn't know if they were going to be set back, so we're going to it through the process, doing our due diligence the best we could. He understood that, did he love it, know, but he also understood from our standpoint what we were doing. So I think the open lines of communication, you know, made it as smooth as it possibly could have. You know, obviously it's a little bit uncomfortable, but you know, the communication was good on both sides, and he understood where we're coming from.
So it's a very difficult challenge. You're a total pro. We always love you coming by. This is season one hundred for the New York Giants. That s Joe Shane. He's a great GM. He's a beautiful family and had a lot of opinions. Yeah, and if you see him screaming careening into the field today to separate people, he does that too.
Stay out of the mess.
Okay, I'm staying out. I'm staying out.
Joe's always good. I think he's happy Hard Knocks has done. He came out pretty much unscathed. But those things will come up if a doone'say has an amazing season and it wasn't neighbors. We'll say, well, they had all three of them in there, and they chose neighbors over a dune. Say, if you know, God forbid, Saquon goes on and has a two thousand yard season. We've got an entire series that showed that the Giants thought they were better off without him and saving and spending that money elsewhere. So Joe's out there, is on a limb, but I feel like he's pretty confident with this team. Now here's the PostScript of it all. After practice, everyone breaks it up, the Giants and Lions. It was tempers, it was cool whatever, but it all chilled out. Lions going sign autographs, Giants go and sign autographs. I head in to use the restroom. I get stopped real quick and im and I'm like, all right, Joe wants to I see Joe Shane. I'm like, what's up. He's like, how funny is this? I had seven missed calls while I was doing the interview with you on Good Morning Football. I'm like, geez, what happened?
Who was it?
Like?
Are you all right? He's like, I didn't know. I'm feeling it vibrating. I'm freaking out. I check it out and it's his friend, Brandon Bean is the GM of the Bills, just messing with him. He was on Live TV and thought he would call him seven times just to scare him. And he's like, yeah, that's Brandon, that's so, that's fun. Those are my guys. Those are the guys that I get lunch with at the Combine every year. It's that trio. It's myself, Brandon Bean and Joe Shane. And there's been sitting somewhere in Saint Joseph's College or Buffalo wherever his Bills are playing, and he's not worried about the team. He's calling Joe Shane seven times because he sees his friend on live TV. Some other sightings today saw Sean Stellato, the agent to Tommy DeVito. Tommy DeVito is still on this team and Shaan Stellato is still very much involved. He made his presence known. He had a giant Italian flag on the back of his shirt. I can't make that up. So Jason mccordy and Devin mccorty, Jason, my dear brother, who hosted Good Morning Football for many years with me, is no longer worth the show. We had a great comp I will not spoil where you will be seeing him this year, but you will be seeing plenty of him during the season, and you will also be seeing him on Sundays as he's doing a CBS package and we'll be doing games for CBS on Sundays. Happy for Jason. I saw Sean O'Hara, our dear old friend from Good Morning Football. He used to always be on set with us, no longer a part of it as we're moving to La Sean was great chatting with him for a bit. And overall, the vibes at the Giants camp are this, Hey, nobody's talking about us. That's right where we want to be. And you sense that everywhere you go. And this defense watching them against the number ones on Detroit Dexter Lawrence Okay, beast and obviously you're looking at Keevon Thibodeaux, number five, flying off the edge. And then they've got a really, really talented linebacker and Bobby Ocariki, who they absolutely love, who is not a household name, but who I think led the NFC and tackles last year. He's one of those dudes. So they are a very good defense, you know, obviously, you pair the rookie from last year Banks with what they added in the two second and third round picks Drew Phillips and Nubin from Minnesota who they're excited about, and then just talent all over the place. On defense, the question is can this offensive line block anybody? And can they figure it out as far as it goes putting up points on the board. My last interaction as I was leaving the building, I popped into use the restroom. I got a drink real quick. I had like a twenty minute talk with Drew Locke. I'll tell you what Aaron, I love Drew Locke. I love Drew Lock as much as I want to get on the Daniel Jones. Like Drew Locke, he just had a kid. He's got a seven month old son. He was awesome. He's talking about the transition, he's talking about Dable, he's talking about the offense, and he's talking about how he just wants to do the best job he possibly can. He's here to compete, he's here to do what he does. But like Drew Lock has won games in this league, and Drew Lock has performed in this league, and I think any talk of like a quarterback controversy has been completely nullified. Like it is Daniel Jones's team. Everyone knows that, and I think Drew's even like ready to understand that. But let's just say if things get rocky, or if Daniel Jones Gotford Big gets injured, like I think Drew lockn win football games for this team too. Yesterday I came out of the Jets and I was like, that's a team that can go to the super Bowl. That's a team that can win the AFC Championship. I don't feel that way about the Giants. I honestly don't, But I think the Giants will be improved and I am excited to see what they get out of this. Molik Neighbors. This could be a sensation or it could be the classic case of a guy who lights it up in July and August gets hurt, doesn't do this, doesn't do that, doesn't adjust to the NFL.
But like, I don't know if I've ever seen a rookie just dominate a practice, especially with all those all pros out there, like I did.
Milik Neighbors today, That's all I got. That is a podcast that is two good interviews that is a head coach a general manager. That is one of the NFL's prime franchises in the New York Giants. But we also got a lot of Detroit Lions today and I got to see them, which was really cool. We'll have another pod next week. I'm gonna be on the road. I'm going to LA in a day. I'll see how I can handle this ping pong yo yo situation. Maybe I'll have some stories for you. But airport run tomorrow, LA Thursday, back in New York Friday. Hopefully will do a pod next week. But I loved doing the Jets and Giants camp and I love giving you guys some insight till next week. This is the Season with Peter Schreger.
