His steady courage, joy amid suffering, and forgiveness of his killer model fortitude, charity, and total trust in God.  This series portrays the brutalities of colonial forced labor, including dehumanizing language about the Congolese workers from the overseer and defense counsel. Isidore is seized and whipped for refusing to remove his scapular; the beating is heard, not graphically described, through repeated whip-crack sound effects and cries of pain. He is then chained in a dark shed with untreated wounds, denied food, water, and medical care, and the overseer threatens his life outright.
