African nations are stepping in to plug the gap in the live sheep market. 

Live sheep exports from Somalia have grown to $979 million in value last year. 

A ban on the live trade by sea will come into effect in Australia in May 2028. 

Exporters say there is growing uncertainty for sheep producers, with no shipments being sent this financial year.
