The nation's peak medical body says building a new medical school in regional Australia won't address a rural doctor shortage.

A 5-point-plan is being put to governments by the Australian Medical Association pushing for a third of students to be from the bush, and would see doctors complete one year of training in a rural setting.

Charles Sturt University and La Trobe University are proposing a Murray Darling Medical School, that'd have campuses in 16 regional centres in New South Wales and Victoria.
