Experts are warning more fish will die in the Darling River, as the blame game intensifies over the ecological catastrophe.

The New South Wales state opposition has released a warning that was given to the state government in 2012 in relation to changes to the Barwon Darling Sharing Rules.

However, state Regional Water Minister Niall Blair says the Government did act on advice from the department.

Federal Water Minister David Littleproud is seeking $5 million of Murray Darling Basin Funds to be used for for a Native Fish Management and Recovery strategy.

While Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has written to the Prime Minster seeking emergency task force to investigate how and why the fish died, including the potential impact of agricultural chemicals like fertiliser.

He wants the taskforce to also look at whether water diversions or management in the Murray-Darling system made the disaster worse.
