Scientists have developed a new type of wheat, which contains ten times the amount of fibre.

The CSIRO has taken part in an international effort to develop wheat varieties which contain a higher content of resistant starch.

The starch is proven to improve digestive health, protect against genetic damage which can lead to bowel cancer and help fight type 2 diabetes.

The team responsible for developing the wheat is hopeful an Australian company will market it locally.

Rural reporter Roshai Murdoch spoke with CSIRO Principal Research Scientist Doctor Ahmed Regina.

She says the team is now working on different varieties to suit different growing environments across Australia.
