Researchers are calling for a shift away from hazard reduction burns in remote areas, with a new study warning the practice isn't beneficial in the long term. 

The  Australian National University study found hazard reductions expose forests and bushland to increased fire risk, because newer growth adds to fuel loads. 

Rural reporter Emily Minney spoke to Professor David Lindenmayer, who says technology can be used as a preventative measure instead.
