Richard Sherman weighs in on the ongoing debate about how much San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy should make on the contract he’ll sign this coming NFL offseason. Sherm pits Purdy’s numbers up against quarterbacks making north of $50 million like Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys, Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers, Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins and contends that Purdy has done more than enough to make the same amount of money as them. Also, he reacts to John Lynch and the Niners suspending De’Vondre Campbell for the rest of the season after walking off the field during their loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald saying he’s “optimistic” about Geno Smith suiting up for the upcoming matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, Sam Darnold leading the Vikings past Caleb Williams’ Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football, the Detroit Lions adding running back David Montgomery to their long list of injuries this season, Emmanuel Acho’s criticism of Dan Campbell, and University of Colorado star Travis Hunter winning the Heisman Trophy over Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.

All right, man Ax, you go ahead.
Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast, presented by our friends and partners over at Brightling. Got me shining right, Got me shining bright. A lot of things to talk about today, but we're gonna start it off with the San Francisco forty nine ers in Brock Parties contract. It's been a lot of debate. Should he get sixty million? Deck got sixty million? You know there's other quarterbacks right now with fifty five million. Trevor Lawrence got fifty five, Jordan Love, Joe Burrow, all that fifty five million to a tongue of billo at fifty three. What does Brock Party deserve? They did a poll in the Bay Area. Thirty eight percent say he deserves twenty to thirty million, twenty nine percent say he deserves between thirty one and forty million, nineteen percent say he deserves between forty one million and fifty million, and fourteen percent say he deserves between fifty one and sixty million. Let me tell you, some people, I hear you. I'm with you, but this is the National Football League. You guys are speaking like fans and businesses don't quite work that way. I'm sure you know you're not happy with his performance right now. But I can name one, two, three, four, five quarterbacks on that list making over fifty million that have not even sniffed a Super Bowl, have not even sniffed the second round of the playoffs, and haven't come close to winning anything. And this guy's been to an NFC championship in a super Bowl. I understand it's not going great this season. That's fine. You know, not every season is going to be go how you want it. You're not going to go to the super Bowl every single season. But he's been had a lot of success in the postseason. He's played incredibly well in the postseason, better than most of these quarterbacks on this list outside of Joe Burrow.
And that's it. That's it.
I mean, you can talk about Dak Prescott and his playoff walls. You could talk about Jordan Love and his playoff walls, and they ended the season last year on an interception off his arm and a two minute drill. Maybe that narrative changes this year, but Trevor Lawrence has one playoff win and no playoffs since has been I think he's fifteen over his last seventeen games or something like that, to a tongue of Bailoa has had the concussion issues.
So when you're.
Negotiating with a team, unless you're willing to move on from brock Purty.
They're going to be paying him fifty plus million.
Now, how they maneuver that money, how they dish it out, how much guaranteed, how much upfront money, how much is injury guaranteed, et cetera, et cetera. That'll be up for debate, but it'll be within the fifty to fifty five million dollar ranges. I don't think it'll go to sixty. The salary cap has jumped and it'll jump again. And quarterbacks always, especially top quarterbacks, there are always a certain amount of certain percentage of the cap. It's been getting really excessive lately because they're closing in on like twenty four to twenty five percent of the cap, but it's usually around seventeen to twenty one percent of the cap it used to be. Now that's kind of ballooned a little bit, but I think he's gonna be around fifty to fifty five million dollars. H Prague and John Lynch are gonna figure out how to spread it out again. I'm sure there are gonna be some some salary cap casualties this year. I don't know who those guys will be. But that's why you have to draft. Well, that's why you have to to replenish your team through the draft and have a lot of depth and have young guys ready to step up because in order to be successful and sustainable for a long time, that's the way you've got to build your team. You're gonna pay guys you have good players, you either let them walk or pay him. And you could hear with the Dallas Cowboys now you hear them talking Stephan Jones talking about they may not pay my caparsons I said that this offseason they hadn't paid him yet.
So it doesn't look like they're gonna pay him.
They're gonna see if they can get a first round or two for them and if somebody else wants to pay him. And that's that's the unfortunate part in It's like if they wanted to pay him, they would already pay him, and the price is only going up. You know, he's a great player. So I'd guess his demand is thirty six thirty seven million dollars now, when before the season it probably would have been thirty four to thirty five. So I again think brock Perty's gonna get his money. I think he's done a great job over you know, a lot of his career, the majority of his career. Unfortunately, this is a down year for him, This is an off year. If we talk about stats and passer ratings, he's still amongst the best in the National Football League. And I think that's the part that's gonna help him. I mean his passer rating compared to all the guys we named, he's the top of all of them, one hundred and six point three passer rating over his career. That's fantastic football. He needs some offensive line help, he needs a healthy roster. That's why you're paying all these guys if you need him on the field in order for your team to function the way they need to function. And that's been a problem this year. And you can say what you want about it, but that's how the National Football League goes, Ladies and gentlemen.
I'm sorry.
Now we can keep to the Devondre Campbell fallout, John Lynch officially announces that he'll be suspended for the rest of the season, three games without pay. There are people out there saying this is unfair, that this is not how the world works. You shouldn't be able to stop him. The NFLPA will likely appeal to this. To highly doubt it. It's unprecedented territory, and when you're in unprecedented territory, you get unprecedented punishment. And that's what's happening right now to Devondre Campbell. He's not going to be rewarded for quitting on his team because imagine the president that that sets for other teams. Hey, you want to get out of here, you want to go try to get on a playoff team right before the season ends. Just walk out, Just walk out the game on your team. You'll get cut, somebody else will pick you up. You'll be playing in the playoffs before you know it, and you might get a ring.
Out of it.
I don't think the NFL wants that. I don't think the NFLPA wants that. I don't think players want that. They don't want guys quitting on their teams like this, especially to get on to another team.
Now, you don't usually.
Have as much shatter as you have heard from the San Francisco forty nine ers, but you can just tell how much it hurt because this wasn't a blowout, This wasn't a game that was out of hand. This is what was a game that he could have impacted in a positive way, and he chose to walk out in a game he would have played a whole half of football. He would have started for the second half, and he would likely have started for the rest of the season. But it is what it is. San Francisco forty nine ers got to figure some things out. They're gonna likely be playing for pride at this point and trust in this team. You got to play for the guys that are next to you, play for your spot next year, show the coaches that you deserve to be on this team the next season, and that your guy that regards the circumstances will go out there and do his job at a high level. Now I'll switch hats because we'll talk about the Seattle Seahawks and Geno Smith. Mike McDonald told reporters they're optimistic that he will be ready to go against the Minnesota Vikings and that is great news for the Seattle Seahawks, because I just don't think that you want to see the other quarterbacks start another game. I'm sorry. I know you're like, oh, he didn't have the whole week. We saw enough. Gino Smith needs to play against this Flores coach defense. His defense has played well all season. They're going to bring a lot of exotic looks, They're going to bring pressure. Geno handles it well. Usually he's trying to stay in the pocket. He's delivering the ball on time if he can, and if he's playing, it gives the Seattle Seahawks the best chance to win. And I'm happy to hear that. It's a lot better than people thought. Then I thought because if the way he walked off and not able to come back into the game, it was really concerning because usually that means it's a longer term injury. So, thank goodness, Gino's gonna be okay. Right now, they're tied with the Rams at the top of the NFC West, but the Rams hold the tiebreaker obviously if they play at the end of the season, and if the Seahawks can win a couple and the Rams win a couple and they're both. Even then their last game will be for all the marbles. More than likely, we'll see how that goes. The Rams play the Jets, Cardinals, and Seahawks. Those aren't considered tough tasks for the Rams. Seahawks play Vikings, Bears, and then Rams again. This Vikings game is the toughest of all those games, so we'll see. They played really well tonight against the Bears. Started off slow, Sam Darnold battled his way through that game. They ran the ball, Aaron Jones ran the ball really well. That defense made some plays, pressure Caleb Williams into an early turnover early in that game, came up with a crucial staying late deep into their red zone to hold the Vikings to three. They're playing good football and it's gonna be a really tough task for the Seattle Seahawks to go in there and then get a victory. But if they can, that keeps their playoff hopes alive in a big way. A loss of the Vikings really puts a damper on their playoff chances. Unless the Rams stumble through one of those two games between the Jets and the Cardinals.
That'll probably be it.
So this Vikings game pretty much for all the marbles for the Seattle Seahawks. They got to bind a way to get this win, and if they do, then they'll have a chance to be playing in the postseason, and likely if they get back into the postseason, they'll likely have another another chance to play that same Packers team that it looked like they kind of figured it out in that second half, So we'll see how that goes Seattle Seahawks fans.

He's in there twelve and two now. The Chicago Bears four and ten continue to struggle. Obviously, all the prayers and all the thoughts go out to Randy Mallis and everything that he's going through. A great Hall of famer, a great person, a guy that played the game the right way, that lived the game the right way, and we hope that he finds himself in good health and he beats this and wins this battle that he's going through. He was an idol of mind growing up when I play receiver, So thoughts and prayers. I hope it all goes great Randy. The Vikings played in his honor today. We saw Chris Carter and Jake Reid come out with his jersey pre game. He saw all the players represent But this was a good win for the Minnesota Vikings.
It's a great season.
I don't think anybody saw the Minnesota Vikings going twelve and two at this point in the season, especially losing Kirk Cousins the way.
They did Flores.
You know, this defense doesn't have a ton of big names, but they got a lot of guys playing really good football, and probably their best football. Jonathan Grenard and Jallas Turner both had a sack in the game. Sam Darnold twenty four or forty one touchdown, one interception, two hundred and thirty one yards. Aaron Jones eighteen carries eighty six yards in a touchdown. Justin Jefferson seven catches seventy three yards in a touchdown. Caleb Williams a solid game eighteen for thirty one one hundred and ninety one yards, one touchdown, but he was you know, he got sacked a few times.
Again.
It's just a struggle of a season for the Chicago Bears. They they've lost eight in a row on one seven on the road. Obviously, they got a number of things they need to fix. They've already fired their coach. Pete Carroll is a name that I've heard that is at least interested in getting the Chicago I'm sure Chicago job. I think there will be a number of coaches that'll be interested in that job. They have a really talented receiving core, they have a talented defense, a lot of great pieces that you can build around, a lot of great pieces you're gonna you can win with. And I'm looking forward to seeing who they pick as their coordinator. Obviously, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn of the Detroit Lions will be names that come up in that discussion. We'll see how they go. We'll see where they go with that. But another good game for the Vikings again, we just talked about them. They played the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle again next week. I'm looking forward to that game. I can't wait. The Bears host the Lions. Might be their ninth loss in a row.
I don't know.
Unfortunately, though, the Detroit Lions are now gonna be without David Montgomery for the rest of the season, and he's sprained his MCL.
That's unfortunate.
You know, Sonic and Knuckles have been a really great combination all season long, and I was looking forward to seeing.
How they pan out in the playoffs.
You know, that's when you need to run the football, That's when you need to lean on your run game. Obviously, a lot of the weight is gonna fall on Jamior gibbs shoulders.
Now he's gonna have to carry a heavier load.
He's gonna have to do more for this offense, and he's already been doing a ton for this They also lost another defensive player, detackle Allan McNeil torn his ACL out for the season. Carlton Davis is out indefinitely with a fractor jaw Khalil Dorsey out for the year with an ankle injury. The Lions already have thirteen different defensive players on IR heading into.
The Bills game.
Nobody Dan Campbell says nobody cares. Nobody's gonna give us a pass or an asterisk next to their record and He's right, nobody cares. But that's a lot of injuries on the defensive side of the football. That's a lot of injuries on a team to put on ir but that's a lot of injuries on defense. We'll see if they can continue to overcome that. Obviously they weren't able to in the Buffalo Bills game. They battled in that game when they lost by seven points. Their offense scores forty two points in that game. But what I really want to talk about if all of these Dan Campbell haters coming out of their woodworks, it's like, now everybody's like saying, you have to play mentally sound football, and you have to. You can't go for it on fourth you can't do things that are unexpected. That's not super Bowl winning. That's not gonna win you super Bowls. I don't know about that, especially coming from Acho a Cho's watched the Philadelphia Eagles and Doug Peterson in a game against the New England Patriots. Doug Peterson and the Philadelphia Eagles that year went for and on fourth down as much as anyone. They were second in the league, and they went forward and went forward and went for it. They were going forward on fourth down all the time and just living by the edge of their seats, because why not if you have the momentum, everybody else loses to There are people that do it exactly as you should. Hey, we're gonna kick it on fourth and three from the three. We're gonna kick it every fourth down. Hey, we're just gonna kick it. We're gonna kick field goals. We're gonna punt the ball and they go home. It's not like that's a strategy that guarantees you success.
It doesn't. This strategy doesn't guarantee you failure.
It's just like when the when the Warriors start shooting threes and they start shooting a boatload of threes, a boatload of threes, and everybody's like, this is gonna work in the playoffs. It never works in the playoffs. Every oh, this is gonna this is gonna stop. They're gonna get beat by a team that just dominates them in the paint. And then the Warriors had a dynasty, and now everybody's shooting threes, and now people forget that you used to play from the post. You used to Oh, it used to be mid range. You have to drive the basketball. You couldn't just live on Live and die by threes. It's changed, literally changed the way basketball is played on a lot of levels, for better or for worse. It's changed it. But before it was unthinkable that this strategy would work. And so Doug Peterson in that Super Bowl. Everybody remembers the Philly Special in that crazy play right before the half.
They were up fifteen to twelve.
It was fourth down, about twenty seven or so seconds to go in the half, fourth down from the one. They run a Philly Special on fourth down and get it, score a touchdown.
Now they're in.
Instead of being up six points, they're up ten points, and they win the super Bowl that year. That's risk, Oh, that's unnecessary risk. They shouldn't have done that. They should have kicked it. They won the super Bowl. We could talk about last year's Wildcard round when the Lions went for it on fourth and one in the second quarter. Sam Laporter scored a touchdown, and that on that play they could have kicked the field goal. They won that game by one point. So again, when you sit here and say all this craziness, are you saying you don't want teams to go for it on fourth down? Because you think that strategy is unsustainable. Perhaps, but not going going forward on fourth down has lost people games too, So there are two sides of the coin. There are times teams go for it and get it and it propels them to the next round. And there are times that they don't go for it and they kicked the field goal and they take the points and they go home anyway, because they played it by the book, And all people can say is they played it by the book. They did what they should have done, but maybe they should have gone for it, Like hindsight is always twenty twenty. But was the on side kick unnecessary? Yes, because the strategy isn't what it used to be. But when Sean Payton kicked an on side kick against Peyton Manning and the Super Bowl and it works and the Saints going to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history, it's a legendary play because he was a risk taker. And now that's how legends are born, that's how tides changed. If the Lions win the Super Bowl playing it this way, it's going to change the way a lot of teams play, because what do you have to lose? Everybody's done it the same way for so long. Eventually things have to adapt, things have to change, things have to evolve, and maybe this is the next evolution and iteration of the NFL. Maybe this is what the three point shot was in the NBA. And you sit there and say every team has four downs and you got to live with it.
You're gonna live with it.
If not, then you're going home anyway, Like, there are a lot of bad teams out there that are doing everything by the book. Hey, we kick it when we're supposed to, where we punting when we're supposed to. We don't go for it, we don't take unnecessary risks. And guess what they've they've got four wins on the season. So let's not go there with that because I don't think that's the right way to see it. But we're gonna keep moving forward and move on to the Kansas City Chiefs. Matt Ryan says they should sit Mahomes. I'm not totally against that, but you gotta win this next one. You gotta win this next one to clinch and if they win the next one and they clinch the number one seed, then then you can sit him. But if he's able to play, I think you have to play him unless you feel comfortable putting Carson Wentz in there and letting him go. I think you have to play him, but you know I'm not the coach. Andy Reid has usually played in. Patrick Mahomes has been injured before in the playoffs or right before the playoffs, he's usually played, so I would guess he's gonna play. They play Houston, Pittsburgh, and the Broncos. The Broncos are a scary team and you don't want to lose those three games. It's not like you've lived in blown teams out this season and played some world beater football. There have been nail biders throughout this season, throughout every single week, whether the team is good or not good by record standards, they've usually struggled and it's come down to the end. And you don't want Patrick mahone sitting on the sideline with a sweatsuit on when those moments come, especially against teams that you could potentially see in the playoffs. The problems that you're gonna have again are your offensive line. You're left and right tackle, and you're talking about two of the premier pass rushers in the National Football League in Houston, so again I see why he wants to send him. Having these Kansas City Chiefs tackles deal with Will Anderson and Daniel Hunter. Do you really want a banged up Patrick Mahomes trying to evade those guys.
Probably not.
But also do you want Carson Wentz out there dealing with that and potentially you lose this game, you lose the next game against the Pittsburgh Steelers team. Now they may be without TJ. Watt, that's still up in the air. But the next three games, the Chiefs play against some of the premier pass rushers in the National Football League. Bendo for the Broncos, the second in the league in sacks with eleven and a half they got I think they got five guys with at least five sacks for the Broncos, you talk about Alex high Smith, Cam Hayward, Preston Smith. Now with the Steelers, there's not gonna get any breaks. So if you rest them, you don't rest them. These are gonna be really, really tough games to win if those tackles can't stand up.
But what about the league.
The league is doing a great, great job of scheduling these games. The Steelers, Chiefs Texans Ravens all have to play three games in eleven days, and they're all meaningful games. If they lose win, there could be a lot of movement in terms of seeding. The Steelers can go from you know, leading the North to fighting for a playoff spot. If they lose a number of these games. The Ravens could be from go from five to six seed to three seed, two seed, depending on how these games shake out. That's why you love the National Football League. Obviously, Buffalo is gonna have a great, great chance, easier schedule right now, and if they win their games, they'll likely be the one or two seed. The Chiefs have probably stay the one seed if they can win one of these last three games.
I'm excited. I'm excited.
It's the most wonderful time of the year, not only because it's Christmas, but because the schedule is so phenomenal. We're gonna get a lot of answers here soon. Now stim to move on to some college football. Obviously, there's a lot of discussion about Trav Hunter winning your Heisman. Deserve special talent, generational talent, never seen it before. Receiver, you know, in ninety two catches over a thousand yard fourteen touchdowns at corner have been up for the Thorpe you know, won all the worst defensive player of the year, Offensive player of the year in Heisman. I think it's gonna be a really long time before we ever see anything like that again. So congratulations to him. Now I'm hearing CJ. Stroud wants Derek Stingley to play receiver because of his elite ball tracking ability.
I love it. Give him a shot. He's a heck of an athlete.
Obviously, they've had some injuries that fin Diggs's out for the season, Nico Collins.
Was out for a while. Give him a shot.
I'm always happy to see a corner play both sides and make an impact. I mean, Travis Hunter winning the Heisman. Maybe that's inspiring people to say, let's break these football rules and put guys out there and give him a chance to make plays on both sides of the football. The more the merrier. I'm happy for it. But again, this transfer portal stuff is insane. Penn State's Bowl prabula enters the transfer portal less than a week before they play the college Football playoff game versus SMU. Why I don't get that because it's not like you're leaving for the draft or you're saying, hey, I don't want to get injured going into the NFL. I could kind of respect that, But you've battled all season long to get to the playoffs. You got a chance to win a national championship or at least compete for one, and you're leaving like that.
That's a bad look. There's no way you.
Could justify that and say that's a good look wherever you're transferring to whatever team you're playing going to play for. I think Penn State had him in the game plan against SMU. When you leave, you leave your teammates. You quit on your teammates to go somewhere else. I mean, I feel like NFL teams have to take that into consideration when talking about drafting these kids. And thinking about drafting these kids, it's got to be some kind of competitive makeup where I'm like, hey, I'm gonna come finish these playoffs and I'm gonna get what I earned because I battled all this time my teammates, And if I want to leave, I'm gonna leave after we get eliminated, not before.
I'm not gonna leave before I do.
All this work and then be like, all right, fellas, we did everything, We did what we said we would do.
We made the playoffs. But y'all, good luck, Mike. I don't know.
I never thought i'd be the guy saying this generation, but what's wrong with these dudes?
Man? What the heck is wrong with these dudes? I don't get that.
But now it's time for our Thursday night football preview presented by Prime Video. The Denver Broncos are playing the La Chargers. The Denver Broncos are playing great football defensively. Offensively, bow Knicks had a really really grind of a game through three interceptions, but again they found a way to win. They found a way for their defense to step up and make plays again. Nick Bonito has a pick six in a game, is second this season along with his eleven and a half sacks. If you knew the name, we'd be talking about an All Pro season for the kid. But I think he's going to be a couple of years away because people just don't know enough about him and the Denver Broncos. Obviously, him and Cooper have been playing really outstanding on the edges for the Broncos. Broncos have a four game winning streak. The Chargers have dropped two in the row. But this is gonna be a game with a lot of ramifications for the end of this season, for this division, for the playoff seeding, etc. Both of these teams have really really good defenses, have pretty average sporadic offenses, but I love a great defensive game. Hopefully we get to see Patrick certain get into this ball game. Obviously he's questionable with an injury. The Chargers defense has been playing really good football, with some really unsung heroes out at the edges and at the cornerback position, some fifth round picks that are playing at a really high level. I think it's gonna come down to the pass rushers getting home. Justin Herbert on a bum leg He's on a bum ankle, He's battling through, showing a lot of toughness. I'm looking forward to this game and seeing who can step up when it matters the most. This is where champions are made, this is when legends are made. December football. Usually it's not in a dome, but hey, so far is a beautiful stadium. I can't wait. But that was this week's Thursday Night Football preview. Presented by Prime Video, and be sure to watch the Broncos take on the Chargers this Thursday. I'll be there. It'll be entertaining, for sure. It'll be an entertaining game and an entertaining show by the best crew in football. Of course I'm biased. Now it's time for my power rankings. Oh it's gonna be a really tough call because Mitchell is Detroit Honolulu Blue. Detroit Lions have been on a tear. They take a bad loss, I mean not an awful loss, because Buffalo bill are a really good team and they're up there in the power rankings too, but I gotta move them down. They now have two losses on the season. I'm gonna move the Kansas City Chiefs up, even though again they've hadwhelming wins, but they still only have one loss on the season. There's a bunch of two loss teams. The Philadelphia Eagles are gonna be two. They're playing some really great football and impressive win versus the Pittsburgh Steelers puts them there. I gotta put Buffalo at three win against the number one team in our power rankings, but they're still they still have three losses on the season. Then I'm gonna then it's gonna be tough, but I'm gonna have to put the Minnesota Vikings in there.
At four, they're twelve and two.
Again, that Flores coach defense, Sam Darnold doing enough, Kevin O'Connell drawing it up, justin, Jefferson continuing to make plays, Jordan Addison flourishing. You gotta appreciate what they're doing out there, and then we gotta have the Detroit Lions backing it up. At five, that defense has just struggled so much and they're getting more and more banged up every single week. Hopefully they're able to turn it around and figure out a way. Aaron Glenn is doing everything he can to duct tape and and hold this defense together with band aids and bubblegum. But if they can find a to get healthy going into these playoffs, they are gonna be a tough team to beat. And I'm sure they'll move up, but we have to bump them down with a loss where they give up that many points they gave up was it forty eight points in that game?
That's tough. That's tough.
Obviously, Buffalo's offense is a really impressive offense. And Detroit's offense was able to score forty two points. Jared golf through for almost five hundred yards. We give them credit for that, but you got to find a way to win these games. You gotta find a way to hold the scores down. I'm sure Detroit will finish this season off strong, hopefully continue to go move towards that number one seed, and they will move closer to the number one rankings in.
These power rankings. Yeah, I know how it is.
I appreciate you guys every week joining me, supporting me, watching me, arguing with me, disagreeing with me. It all is love to me.
