In April, former building and construction minister Chris Penk announced a scheme to allow trusted plumbers and drainlayers to self-certify. 

This means they can sign off their own work, speeding up building and making it cheaper.

The new plumbing and drainlaying self-certification scheme officially starts tomorrow, 7 September 2026.
