45 Years in Bloom: Jamie Urquhart and the Rare Trillium

View descriptionShare

What started with a single rare plant has turned into a 45-year labour of love for Wānaka gardener Jamie Urquhart.

Back in 1985, Jamie was given a rare North American Trillium, and over the decades he's carefully divided and multiplied it. Today, he has thousands of plants and potentially one of the largest collections of this particular Trillium in the Southern Hemisphere.

In this episode, Jamie shares the story behind the collection, why this beautiful double-white Trillium is so difficult to reproduce, and why he waited decades before making the plants available to other gardeners.

A fascinating story about patience, preservation and what can grow from just one plant.
