You're listening to a Mummamea podcast. Mumma Mea acknowledges the traditional owners of land and waters that this podcast is recorded on. Hi. I'm Kimberly Braddish from Mumma MEA's twice daily news podcast, The Quickie with Your Headlines. For Friday, January ten, two massive wildfires, the Palisades Fire near Malibu and the Eton Fire near Pasadena, continue to burn uncontained, devastating Los Angeles, but nearly twelve thousand, five hundred hectares consumed and thousands of structures destroyed. At least seven people have died. Over one hundred and eighty thousand residents have been evacuated, and another two hundred thousand remain under evacuation warnings. The death toll is expected to climb as authorities gain access to burnt homes. While Eaton's fire's growth has slowed, officials worn of intensifying winds that could reignite rapids spread with gusts expected to reach one hundred kilometers an hour. The fires have destroyed celebrity homes in Pacific, Palisades, reduced neighborhoods to ash, and left thousands seeking refuge in temporary shelters. Paris, Hilton Anafaris, Billy Crystal, and Eugene Levy are among the celebrities whose homes were destroyed. Aerial and satellite imagery show the vast devastation, with plumes of smoke visible from space. Firefighters have contained the Sunset Fire in Hollywood, sparing iconic landmarks like the Walk of Fame. President Joe Biden declaring a massive disaster in California as firefighters and resources pour in from across the country. Amid the chaos, Chef Jose Andres has provided food relief, and actress Jamie Lee Curtis has pledged one million US dollars to recovery efforts. The fires were driven by powerful Santa Anna winds, which roared through parts of California with hurricane like force after months of dry weather. The U. S. Supreme Court has rejected Donald Trump's attempt to delay his sentencing in a New York State corps where he was convicted on thirty four counts of falsifying business records related to hush money payments to pawn actor Stormy Daniels. Trump, the first former US president to face criminal prosecution and conviction, sought to invoke presidential immunity. While appealing the ruling, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office argued against intervention, calling the prosecution justified and politically neutral. The trial judge indicated Trump is unlikely to face prison time and will instead receive an unconditional discharge. This would place a guilty judgment on Trump's record, but would not impose custody, a fine, or probation. Trump's lawyers contend that prosecutor's improperly admitted evidence of Trump's official acts during the trial. They also argue that as president elect, Trump is immune from prosecution during the period between his November election victory and his inauguration. While the New York prosecutor said all of the evidence the defendant challenge in his post trial motion either concerned unofficial conduct that is not subject to any immunity or is a matter of public record that is not subject to preclusion. As a trial court correctly held. As to Trump's argument that he is immune as president elect, the prosecutors said, this extraordinary immunity claim is unsupported by any decision from any court. Sentencing is scheduled for Friday in Manhattan. A police officer and a man have been shot after a physical altercation at a home in Annalie, Brisbane, Queensland. Police responded to a disturbance this morning where the confrontation escalated. Both the officer and the men were taken to hospital for treatment. The Queensland Premier says incidents such as these send a shiver up your spine. He praised the bravery of police and called for a thorough investigation into the incident. The Ethical Standards Command, with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission, will lead the inquiry, and the wiggles Big Red Car has been replaced by a big red ute. The Wiggles are going country with a new album, Wiggle Up Gideap, featuring collaborations with Dolly Parton, Laney Wilson Orvilpeck and even the late Slim Dusty, featuring music he recorded with The Wiggles before his death in two thousand and three. Purple Wiggle Locky Gillespie calls the project a celebration for all ages, while Blue Wiggle Anthony Field describes it as one of their most exciting albums yet. The band will perform Wiggle Up gide Up at the time Worth Country Music Festival later in January, before touring Australia, the UK, US and Canada in twenty twenty five.
