Are Men The Real Winners In Gender Neutral Awards?

View descriptionShare

Last week the Australian Recording Industry Association Awards, better known as the ARIAs were live streamed from Sydney, and for the first time some of the prizes were handed out without artists being restricted to specific categories due to their gender.

It marked a significant turning point for our music industry, and is part of a bigger movement of awards ceremonies across the world increasingly making their trophies gender-neutral, but not everyone is convinced this will help the cause of the queer community or women.

The Quicky speaks to a gender expert and our own entertainment guru to find out why this effort to be more inclusive might actually only really help men, and ultimately make it even harder for women and non-binary people to achieve the recognition they deserve.
