You're listening to a Muma Mia podcast. Mumma Mea acknowledges the traditional owners of land and waters that this podcast is recorded on Hi. I'm Kimberly Braddish from m and MEA's twice daily news podcast, The Quickie with Your Headlines for Wednesday, January eighth, Meta is ending its US fact checking program and easing restrictions on discussions about sensitive topics like immigration and gender identity on its platforms. The owner of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads is bowing to criticism from conservatives as Donald Trump prepares to become president for a second time. The movie is Meta's biggest overhaul of its approach to managing political content on its services in recent memory, and comes as CEO Mark Zuckerberg has signaled a desire to mend his relationship with the incoming president. Zuckerberg posting a video saying, We've reached a point where it's just too many mistakes and too much censorship. It's time to get back to our roots around free expression. He acknowledged the role of the recent US elections in his thinking, saying it feels like a cultural tipping point towards once again prioritizing speech. In place of a formal fact checking program, the company will instead rely on crowdsourced fact checking contributions from users, similar to the community notes program used by Elon Musk's social media platform x. It will stop proactively scanning for hate speech and other types of rule breaking, and review such posts only in response to user reports. It will allow users to call out posts that are potentially misleading and need more context, rather than placing the responsibility on independent fact checking organizations and experts. The head of the International Fact Checking Network challenged Zuckerberg's characterization of its members as biased or censorous, while Australian Green Senator Sarah Hanson Young has called it a dangerous move, telling ABC Radio Australians will face more misinformation, abuse and trolling online. Australian Associated Press Chief executive Lisa Davis says independent fact checkers are a vital safeguard against the spread of harmful misinformation and disinformation that threatens to undermine free democratic debate in Australia and aims to manipulate public opinion. Three people have died in a seaplane crash off Rottnest Island, with their bodies recovered from the wreckage last night. The WA Premier has confirmed the plane plunged into the water shortly after takeoff in Thompson Bay with seven people on board yesterday afternoon. The victims include a sixty five year old Swiss tourist, a sixty year old Danish tourist, and the thirty four year old Perth based pilot. Four other passengers were rescued from the water, with three hospitalized and one discharged. The Cessna to eight, recently acquired by Swan River Seaplanes, crashed into the water shortly after takeoff, reportedly striking Philip Rock near Thompson Bay. Federal investigators are examining the incident, focusing on wreckage, recovery, flight data and maintenance records. WA Premier Roger Cook and Prime Minister Anthony Ourbatasy express their condolences to the victim's families, acknowledging the public's heroic efforts during the rescue. Nick Curios is in doubt for the Australian Open because of an abdominal strain. He was primed for his Melbourne Park comeback next week, which would be his first major since the twenty twenty two US Open. He has been sidelined with career threatening wrist and knee injuries that required three rounds of surgery. After making his official return from injury at last week's Brisbane International, where he played singles and partnered format world number one Novak Djokovic in the doubles, Curios revealed his comeback could be cut short. He's posted to Instagram saying that he had withdrawn from an exhibition event with Djokovic in Melbourne tomorrow, but was still hopeful of suiting up for the Slam. Curios wrote, Unfortunately, I won't be able to play with my good friend this Thursday as I've had an ultrasound on my abdominal and have a Grade one strain. And Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster have confirmed their relationship it seems, and they want everyone to know about it. Jackman's long standing relationship with Debra Leefess has been well documented in Australian history, and so it was a major upset when they announced their divorce in September twenty twenty three. But one year later, in news that no one saw coming except for the very biggest Broadway nerds, Hugh Jackman was linked to his long term friend and former co star Sutton Foster. Now their romance has been confirmed in what can only be described as a very sweet and very staged stroll about town for the paparazzi. In new photos obtained by People magazine, the pair can be seen walking hand in hand along the streets of Santa Monica. Given the ease the pair have had in keeping their romance under wraps until now, it seems this sweet display was their way of confirming the relationship on their own terms with a nice, big exclusive label.
