Hello, Puzzlers, Welcome to the Puzzler Podcast, the Ghost Pepper in your puzzling Hot Sauce. I am your host, AJ Jacobs, and I am here with our guest, the great Susie Banicarum, co host of In Retrospect podcast. Right here on iHeart. Welcome, Susie. Hi.

Aj.

We are delighted to have you. We love your podcast. You and your co host Jessica Bennett do a deep dive on a cultural phenomenon from the eighties or nineties. We were talking last time about Pamela Anderson's red Suit, Amy Fisher, the Long Island, Lolita, all sorts of good stuff. So this puzzle is in honor of your show In Retrospect because it is about years past.

All right.

So the title of the puzzle is name that year and tune. It's a two parter. It's a two part puzzle. Oh no, but I'm I feel confident you will freeze through both parts with hints as long as I elect to.

I don't know if I'm gonna get the years, but maybe I can get the title.

Well, there you go, Yes, the years. It's gonna be a little tricky, but I think that's what I'm here for If you guess high, I'll say you gotta go lower. If you guess low, I'll say hi. So all right, So here's how it works. This is an example, so don't feel pressure on this one. I'm gonna give you three events, three or four events that happen in a certain year, and you will name that year. So, for instance, if I said Rocky was released, apple Link was founded, and it was the US by centennial.

Oh, I see, yeah, so it would be nineteen seventy six.

Nineteen seventy six exactly. All right. Now here comes the pop culture apart, or at least the musical part. I'm going to ask you to name a song that contains the last two digits of that year. So can you name a song that contains the number seventy six?

The song contains it or the title of the song contains it.

Well, you're right, that's a great question. I would say both. In this case, certainly, I think it's both. So and in this case it was it's a broad It's this is not pop song. It's a Broadway song from the music man.

Oh, I have never seen the music man.

Oh. Interesting, So you are a pop culture fan, but not really Broadway.

Is that?

I think Broadway? Fine, but it's not my like, you know, I don't love got it? First one?

Well, it is seventy six trombones bumppop. That's all I know. Okay, seventy six troumbobs all right. These others are not Broadway, so that's why I had to use it for the health ample. Yeah Broadway. Okay, all right, are you ready? Here we go? Name this year. This was the year the Sopranos debuted. It was the year of the Clinton impeachment trial and the Blair witch project and y two K fever.

It was hy two K fever nineteen ninety nine.

It was ninety nine. All right. Now, do you have any songs that come to mind with the number ninety nine?

It's a print song, right, isn't the song that is nine?

Oh?

Yeah, it's party like it's party like that. There you go there. There are actually two others, so well, one is a jay Z song ninety nine problems right. The other it's ninety nine balloons right exactly ninety nine something? All right, so you got multiple points for that, all right. For the next one, I'm ready, h Okay. This was the year when Branjelina became I was at its most heated. Tom Cruise jumped on Oprah Winfrey's couch to declare his love for Katie Holmes, and Broke Back Mountain was released? What year? So this one? Yeah, just take a guess, because I'll give you higher or lower?

Is it in the nineties?

This one is post nineteen nineties?

Okay, So I want to say maybe two thousand and four.

Oh so close to the little higher It is two thousand and five, all right, And now I need a song with a five in it.

Nine to five?

Great one, that's not the one I was thinking about.

You were thinking of. That's the best song.

Ever with you remembered that the one I was thinking of is not the best song. But it just makes me laugh every time I I think about it.

Does it have Does it have the number five? But it can be part of another number, like fifty Ways to Lose Your Lover? Oh?

Interesting, we had I had that as an example. Wait, we might have to cut that in reference, But no, no, I didn't actually do that one. Okay, So yeah, no, this is just the number five, and it involves characters such as Monica, Erica, Rita Tina, Sandra, Mary, Jessica, and they all had just a little bit of each one of those.

Yeah, I can think of the song you're saying, like, I can hear the song, but I don't know the mambo number five.

It is exactly that mambo number five, that gay perfect and I just love because yes, and.

I get what you love about it. I hope you guys play a little clip of it right at that moment.

Well, I was hoping you might want to sing a couple.

Of Nobody wants that, not you, not me, not the audience, No one wants to hear.

Fair enough. There was all also this I wouldn't have gotten but five Minutes to Live by Johnny Cash and five Years by David Bowie, even though I was a huge David Bowie. Pan, I don't remember that song five Years.

I like David Bowie too, and I haven't heard that either.

All right, well what about this one? Are you ready named this year?

Now?

Remember it's not eighties or nineties. It's all over the place. The Adams Family and The Munsters both premiered in this year, which I didn't know. I thought the first Aims family, not the Reps exactly, not the remake, not the movies. I thought that one was a ripoff of the other, but I guess not. It was the Civil Rights Act. President Johnson signed that into law. The Berkeley Free Speech Movement happened. The Warren Commission was established to investigate John F. Kennedy's assassination. So what year are you thinking?

Nineteen sixty four?

You got it, and the song for sixty four. You don't need the whole nineteen sixty four.

Four I can. I'm thinking of a song that I can't. It's like when I'm sixty four.

It is when I'm sixty four exactly? Will you still love me? Will I still leave me? And as I am approaching, I'm like less than ten years away from sixty four, So it doesn't seem like as a funny as like, oh, it's so crazy.

Not me, I'm twenty four. I don't know what you're talking about.

Like that. I thought so So all right, Well that was it, that was great. You did fantastic.

Oh my god, I believe it.

And do you have a favorite song featuring a number yourself? Well, you mentioned fifty ways to leave your lover, which.

Well nine to five. Really, I'm a dolly Parton fan, My dog is named after Dolly Parton, so nine to five.

Oh, yes, that's right. And yes, and you had said you usually call her.

Dolly, but I've Dolly Parton when she's bad, she's bad, sometimes.

Use a full name. Well, that was super fun. And I guess you probably haven't done an episode on Dolly Parton.

Now.

We haven't done a Dolly Parton episode because there's nothing problematic about Dolly Parton. She's not an unproblematic queen. And that is why I named my dog after her, because if I had used a celebrity that had, you know, problems, I would have had to rename her at some point.

Exactly. Yes, Dolly Parton is uncancellable. She will never have problems.

We hope, A beautiful ray of sunshine.

Absolutely well, thank you, Susie. It was a joy to have you speaking of rays of sunshine.

Thank you.

And before we wrap up for the puzzlers at home, I have an extra credit puzzle. So what year is this? And then also take the last two digits and give us a song and feel free to sing it to yourself. This was the year when Gangham style came out by South Korean artists PSI, the Curiosity Rover landed on Mars and Barack Obama was re elected to the presidency. What year is that and what song features that number? And we will see you here tomorrow for more puzzling puzzles that will puzzle you puzzlingly.
