Hello Puzzlers. Welcome to the Puzzler Podcast, the Take a Penny Leave a Penny bowl at your Mom and Pop puzzle shop. I am your host, A J. Jacobs, and today's guest is the great Jason Concepsion, writer, podcaster of so many podcasts. Welcome Jason.
Thank you for having me. It's a delight and it's my honor.
Well, it is our honor. You have wide ranging interests. One of them, though, is you are an NBA super fan self described superfan. Yeah, who is your NBA team? Are you allowed to New York?
The New York Knicks?
The New York Knicks fantastic. Do you remember the first New York Knicks game you ever went to in person?
Went to guys. It was a while before I ever saw them. The first game that I ever saw involving the Knicks happened in about two thousand and two. They were on the road. They were playing the Golden State Warriors in Oakland, and this was a period of time when the Knicks were kind of not good. But they did win that game in part because of a Glen Rice. Glen Rice was a Nick for a period of time. A Glen Rice jumper at the buzzer.
Ah, it's a nice story. That's a nice yeah. And did you in addition to being a fan, were you ever a player, a high school player, or anything like that.
I was a pro player. In my driveway, we would my brother and I would lower the rim to seven feet or thereabouts. And honestly, dunking on my little brother is a memory I recall to the stay fondly. I'll hold it in my hands and think about it as as the day progresses.
Her happy place. Yeah. Yeah, And did he ever dunk on you or it was always one way dunking?
If I if he did, I can't remember. I can't recall that he did.
That's nice. Well, today's puzzle is about the NBA, But not the NBA you're thinking of. I'm sorry, Oh, that's right. We like to do the misdirection. It's not the National Basketball Association. It's instead the letters NBA hidden inside of words and phrases. So I will give you a clue and then you tell me the word that has NBA. An example would be lacking equilibrium, Like if a player is falling over while shooting, you might say that player is unbalanced. So you have the U then the NBA and then the Lancet. So there's the NBA hidden, So I see.
So, so they have to be in order.
They do have to be in order. They are all NBA, just like that. And and we're gonna throw in a little basketball themed clues just to make you feel comfortable. All right. NBA players toss basketballs, but corn hole players toss these. Do you know the game cornhole? The backyard game.
Yeah, my backyard game cornhole, involving a wooden board with a hole in it. And I believe those are.
Bean bags, bean bags exactly, b nbas exactly nailed it. I like the fist in the air. You deserve it, all right. This is a game you might find it arcades, not Papa Shot, but another game featuring bumpers and flippers.
Bumpers and flippers going back in time here, although you still see these round. I am going to say that is a pinball machine.
It is a pinball machine, exactly, pitt an NBA. Oh all right, how about this one. In the off season, some players like to relax at the beach doing this. Not just players, everyone, well not everyone. You might have some allergies, you might have some skin issues, but a lot of people enjoy this. Hmm on the beach.
So many things could take take place on the beach. But I think we're thinking, if you're at the beach, it's a sunny day. Yes, that's a good I'm going to guess that you're you're weighing there and perhaps you are sunbathing.
That's it, sun and bathing, NBA thing you ready for the next year? Route you're rolling through through, nothing, no problem. This town is home to the University of Wisconsin's Phoenix basketball team, but it is better known for its NFL franchise. That's it. I kind of left it in the air, but better known NFL franchise with a period.
This franchise, I believe it is unique in that it is communally owned by the fans of the team known as Cheeseheads. And I believe this would be the the Green Bays.
That is correct, exactly America's favorite socialist football team. I'm just kidding. I don't want to get angry letters from do you know? I? Is it packed like meat packers? Is that where they got it? Do you know? I don't know.
That's a great question, and I don't quite know the answer to it. But I would imagine that you're right, all right, I'm sort of yeah.
Well, let's pretend I am. Okay. This is written by Greg who's more of a basketball fan, so I'm taking his cue that this is that this is a gettable answer. Nicknamed Rabbit, this NBA All Star spent fourteen season, is forward for the Lakers, twenty two as manager for the Clippers, and is regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. And he's got NBA in the middle of his name, in the middle of his two names. So the first name is.
This is a This is a tricky one.
I must admit, well, Greg is tricky.
But the person I'm thinking of I believe it is. I believe this would be the legendary Elgin Baylor.
It is Elgin Baylor. Thumbs up from this side. All right, we only got one more? You are you have gotten them all.
I'm Elgin Baylor, who once averaged something like thirty five points a game while on active duty in the Army. What an incredible feat of sports. Yes, that happened.
So he would go he would play a game and then go to the front.
And he would know he was at the base, always at the base, so he would play and then drive to the base and be there for a number of days, then drive back.
That is a mate. I guess that you know basic training is good for cardio vascular life. You know, yeah, but but quite amazing, all right. Last one. Michael Jordan's baseball stats include a two oh two batting average, no offense Michael Jordan, we know you're the greatest, and three home runs, but his earned him thirty of these. He earned thirty of these while playing baseball.
Thirty. Well, speed is the hint here, and based on the previous clue and puzzle question, I'm going to say, using the same trick that this must be stolen bases.
It must be, and it is. You got it a perfect score. You swept. You swept that nicely done. Well, thank you for coming. You were great. I think we could take up like half an hour plugging all your projects. So maybe you want to just pick a couple that you can tell people about.
Sure, a watch Miguel Wants to Fight, the movie I co wrote with my co host four time New York Times bestselling author Chase Serrano. There you go. Well before we wrap up, as always a puzzle for you at home. This comedian played a coach on the show A Different World and starred in the film Jingle All the Way. But interesting little fun trivia few people know he was recruited to play basketball by Greg Popovich at the Air Force Academy. Fun fact he never actually played, but he could have. And that person has an MBA in the middle of their name, and you will find out who it is by googling. For better yet by coming back tomorrow. So we'll meet you here then for more puzzling puzzles that will puzzle you puzzlingly.
