In periods of volatility, investors can't control the headlines, but they can stick to tried-and-true processes, argues Perpetual’s Nathan Hughes in this new podcast.

“When there's volatility and there's a lot of news flow out there in the market, share prices can move wildly,” says Hughes, an Australian equities portfolio manager at Perpetual.

“But those swings are not really in line with what's changing on an underlying value basis.”

That gap between market price and business value is where Hughes sees opportunity.

“Periods like this, with lots of volatility, can be great opportunities for us to pick up some cheap companies.”

Hughes says the challenge is staying disciplined when markets are moving quickly and emotions take over.
