Pandemic-era policies — like forced masking and shuttered classrooms — have motivated a new batch of candidates to get involved. A rising tide of “woke” policies on race and gender issues have contributed to the motivation.

In Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, controversial books in school libraries has prompted outrage from parents who say some of the offerings are age-inappropriate for students in the school. The local activist group, Moms For Liberty-Mecklenburg, proposed an advisory review committee to rate books in school libraries.
