Empowering Young Minds 30 years into South Africa’s Democracy

View descriptionShare

As South Africa commemorates 30 years of democracy, we experience the overlap of Father's Day and Youth Day on the 16th of June. This unique overlap invites the nation to reflect on the pivotal roles of both fathers and youth in shaping a democratic society.

Youth Day, a public holiday in South Africa, honours the students who participated in the Soweto Uprising of 1976, where thousands of black students in Soweto protested against the apartheid government's policy of enforcing Afrikaans as the medium of instruction in school. The youth of today stand on the shoulders of a resilient and courageous generation that came before them, particularly those, 1976. This day serves as a reminder of the power and potential of young people to drive social change.

We talk to Fathers Abednico Mhlangeni, Sizwe Mabanga and members of the youth  Thembisile Dlamini and Zanele Mhlangeni..
