Focus: Anti-Apartheid activist and internationally acclaimed academic, Prof. Jerry Coovadia passed away in his family home (Durban) at the age of 83. Prof. Coovadia became world-renowned for his research in HIV/AIDS, with a particular focus on the transmission of the disease from mother to child as well as breastfeeding. 

Prof. Coovadia was also among the academics who advocated for antiretroviral therapy at the height of HIV denialism in the early 2000s. President Cyril Ramaphosa has also reflected on the loss of a dedicated activist, academic and pioneer in the medical fraternity.
