The Save South Africa Civic Movement is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently reinstate the death penalty in order to arrest the scourge of gender-based violence in communities. This they argue would serve as a powerful deterrent. However, most of you will recall that the death penalty was abolished in 1995 and was declared unconstitutional as it violated the 1994 constitution. So why want it back now and what has changed over the years?
