We revisit the ongoing debate over Starlink. Our guest argues that the problem with Starlink goes beyond the country’s Black Economic Empowerment program and she feels that allowing Starlink to operate in the country is akin to putting a powerful weapon into the hands of people who have expressed nothing but contempt for South Africa. Communications Minister, Solly Malatsi recently published a policy direction that will allow companies like Starlink to operate in the country through alternative equity equivalent investment programs. Those who support it, are of the view that policy shift is needed as it will attract foreign investment, however, the critics reject this notion, saying that the minister’s directive undermines the sovereignty of the country.
