Last year, Bakwena Ba Mogopa embarked on a strike action that forced Glencore to close its mine for six weeks. What happened afterwards is that Glencore took the community to court and the Bakwena community lost the case against the mine last month. However though, they believe that the ruling limits the community’s right to protest, which is a violation of their constitutional right and they are of the view that if this issue is left unchallenged, it simply means that more rural communities will be unfairly treated or exploited by mining companies across the country.
